The University of Ghana-Carnegie Writing Centre (UG-CWC), in Collaboration with the Centre for Teaching and Learning Innovation (CTLI), University of Ghana, invites graduate students of the University who are in their thesis year to the next in the Workshopping Series.
Details of the workshop are as follows:
Date: 19-20 April 2023
Venue: Biotechnology Centre Conference room (Near West African Centre for Crop Improvement)
Kindly register using the link below. Deadline for registration is Monday 17th April 2023.
https://forms.gle/V5P1J7bqMR7eBPCa8
Workshop overview
The UG-Carnegie Writing Centre/CTLI Workshopping Series focus on face-to-face coaching on specific sections of a writing project: introduction, literature review, methodology, analysis and discussion of results, and conclusions. The workshopping sessions deliver hands-on training for participants to work through various stages of their draft manuscripts. This module is intended to help students improve their writing of the methodology section of their thesis.
The methodology section is an essential part of your thesis/scholarly writing, as it enables you to answer the question of how the research questions were addressed (i.e., what materials and/or methods/experimental methods were used). The section may outline the methodologies applied to answer the research questions; the application of existing methods, theory and tools; or principles, concepts and models on which data collection or fieldwork is based. The form for each person’s methodology section may vary, but the building blocks are similar.
This workshop will guide you through the logical structure, language and style features of research methodology. An efficient use of these features will enable readers to understand/assess/validate how you studied the problem, the steps/procedures you followed in seeking answers to research questions and in what order, the replicability of experiments, etc. These features of language and style include tense, voice, point of view, precision & directness in describing design and procedure (e.g., avoiding wordiness, redundancy, nominalisation etc.), and how to maintain objectivity. Others include tools used to achieve coherence and clarity (e.g., by eliminating ambiguity and vagueness).
This two-day programme will therefore provide thorough, step-by-step, one-on-one practical sessions for writing a good methodology section. Participants must submit their draft methodology chapters before the workshop begins. They will then work with the resource persons during the sessions to review, revise, rewrite or fine tune their drafts. The goal is to help each participant produce a methodology section that communicates clearly and logically the steps/procedures adopted to answer research questions in the thesis.
Objectives of the Workshop
· Guide participants to apply the linguistic resources that are critical to writing a methodology for a thesis/scholarly paper
· Help students understand and practice writing the methodology as a structured narrative
· Offer hands-on practice in revising and improving the clarity and flow of the methodology section
Structure of the Module
This module will be delivered through the following topics.
1. Writing methodologies as narratives: Linguistic resources
2. From paragraph to chapter: The structure of the methodology as a narrative
3. Conveying detail: The language of description in methodologies

Management of the University of Ghana has noted, with grave concern, comments by some Members of Parliament about the new UG residential policy which sought to create the impression that the University is flouting a court order and, therefore, disrespecting the Judiciary, the Constitution and the mandate of the good people of Ghana. The University notes some inaccuracies in the statements made on the Floor of Parliament on Wednesday, March 29, 2023. Below, we provide these facts to set the records straight.
Following the order of injunction issued by the High Court asking the University to halt implementation of the new policy, the University stopped further assignments to Commonwealth Hall. By that time, new students assigned were already in residence. Contrary to the allegations and impression created on the Floor of Parliament, the University has not violated any court order.
The University has also exercised its legal rights by appealing against the court order as well as requesting for a Stay of Execution of the order of injunction.
The University is governed by a Council, made up of persons of high repute, who are committed to ensuring the welfare of students and a conducive environment for teaching and learning. It must be stressed that the implementation of the new residential policy had been done before the court issued the order of injunction.
The reporting date for fresh men and women for the start of the 2022/2023 academic year was January 4, 2023, which preceded receipt of the order of injunction. Prior to this, freshers had already selected rooms from the available slots through an online platform. Accordingly, all fresh men assigned to Commonwealth Hall moved in upon reporting on January 4, 2023.
It must be stressed that allocation of rooms to freshers assigned to Commonwealth Hall ceased immediately notice of the injunction was received, and has not been resumed.
The University gave all continuing students who were previously legally resident in Commonwealth Hall the opportunity to take up rooms in the UGEL halls. As at 30th March, 2023, 91% of these continuing students had accepted the offer, paid, and are currently in occupancy in the UGEL halls. Students who genuinely had difficulty in paying and explained their situation to Management were duly provided support through the University’s Student Financial Aid Office.
The University would like to put on record that traditional halls are not assigned to students in perpetuity.
The new residential policy, where accommodation in traditional halls is reserved for freshers, is being rolled out progressively, starting from Commonwealth Hall and Mensah Sarbah Hall. The policy is to enable freshers settle in easily into university life in the first year.
We wish to emphasise that the new residential policy is not a punishment and no student who accepted the accommodation offer at the UGEL halls was denied residence, as members of the public are being made to believe.
Academic work at the University is progressing steadily, and students are preparing for end-of-semester examinations.
We reiterate that the University of Ghana is a law-abiding institution. Further, we encourage all aggrieved persons including alumni of the affected halls to engage with the University to understand the purpose and need for the new policy. The University of Ghana is deeply concerned about the welfare and security of our students, staff and all other stakeholders and will do everything in its power to protect them.

Disability in Education: Sustainability of an Inclusive Africa – University of Ghana 2023 Conference
Call for Abstracts
Description of Conference
The overall goal of Disability in Education is to frame disability education as the crucial missing piece to sustainable development. The project’s objectives that stem from this overarching purpose are three-fold: (1) to identify the scope and impact of intersectional, geopolitically- situated, disability-based discrimination; (2) to increase the multi-disciplinary knowledge and reach of a pan-African, disability-centered approach to sustainable development; and (3) to develop recommendations for improving the social and economic inclusion of disabled Africans. This conference seeks to bring together stakeholders in the African disability arena to improve inclusive education and unify the efforts of individual partners to achieve SDG goal 4 of ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
This conference will feature the following keynote speakers:
· Gertrude Oforiwa Fefoame, Disability and Inclusion Rights Advocate in Ghana & Member, United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
· Edmund Asiedu, presenting Calling Out Inequality in Global Transportation Systems
· Farida Nana Efua Bedwei, Navigating Ghana’s Labour Market as a Persons with Cerebral Palsy
Scholarship in the area of disability studies in education has challenged the idea that inclusion— conceptualized within curriculum, pedagogy, and the institutional organization of classrooms (Eilers, 2020)— is solely about placement and has focused on the contributions of disabled students to our understanding of belonging, participation, and equity in educational spaces (Slee, Corcoran & Best, 2019). Disability studies in education seeks to disrupt the inclusion discourses that simply move special education into so-called regular classrooms. Instead, disability studies in education aims to re-envision classrooms as places where disability is normal and disabled people are valued and disablement are contextualized as per history. This means that the underlying socio-political contexts that contribute to disablement—including poverty, colonization, capitalism, and environmental harm—are foregrounded while caring for disabled people, educating disabled students, and employing disabled individuals (Kissi, 2018, 2020; Liasidou, 2023).
This foregrounding can contribute to sustainable development goals (UN, 2018). Granted, there is no unanimity in scholarly fields on framing either political or human development as the objective to inclusion (Douglas & Santinele Martino, 2020). Disability studies in education along with childhood studies and inclusive education and inclusive spaces have all congregated around a critique of normative development. Certainly, the case that the construction of a “normal” child in early childhood and school-based education is rooted in ableist, colonial, and Eurocentric views of childhood. However, the rejection of developmentalism leaves a gap in how to engage with differences in children as they grow and learn into adulthood. There is opportunity to engage with African theories and worldviews as a model for inclusive education and the decolonization of structural spaces. Drawing on Indigenous scholarships we know that the valuing of human differences is conceptualized as a gift, with recognition of human development as natural and social (Underwood, Ineese-Nash, Bomberry & Hache, 2017; Kissi, 2018;2020).

The Confucius Institute is accepting 2023 Scholarship applications from students studying Chinese. Application guidelines are as follows:
The University of Ghana made adjustments to Academic Facility User Fees for the 2022/2023 academic year based on rates approved by Parliament and communicated through the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
The University had earlier charged students subsidized fees for the 2019/2020, 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 academic years, rather than the approved rates for these academic years. The subsidized fees were in the first instance because in the 2019/2020 academic year, University Management decided to suspend the implementation of the new fees until the 2020/2021 academic year. This was to spare students from a fee increase in the middle of the academic year.
With the outbreak of COVID-19 in March 2020, and its associated challenges, Management accepted a plea from student leadership to further suspend the implementation of the parliamentary approved and gazetted fees until the 2021/2022 academic year.
In spite of these, there have been allegations that the University charged illegal fees for the 2022/2023 academic year.
The University’s Governing Council met on 16th January 2023 to deliberate on the matter and the request from the honorable Minister of Education for a 15% increase on fees approved by Parliament. Council established that UG had indeed already complied with the Fees and Charges Act, 2022 (Act 1080), by charging the approved 15 % increase of fees over the fees approved by Parliament.
In addition, the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education convened a meeting on February 9, 2023, with representatives from UG Management and UG student leaders, the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and the Ministry of Education, to deliberate on the matter.
At the meeting, after listening to all parties, the Parliamentary Select Committee established that UG had indeed complied with Act 1080 and that the allegations of charging illegal fees for the 2022/2023 academic year were false.
The University has since received formal communication from the Parliamentary Select Committee confirming that UG fees for the 2022/2023 academic year are legal, and based on the level of fees as approved by Parliament.
The Select Committee appealed to UG to consider offering a discount on fees for the current academic year to lessen the burden on students, and this request will accordingly be brought to the attention of the University Council to be deliberated upon.

Postgraduate Dissertation Research Award
Project title: Developing A Double-Duty Food-Based Policy Bundle to Assure Healthier Diets In Ghana (Healthier Diets 4 Healthy Lives Project)
The Healthier Diets for Healthy Lives (HD4HL) Project is pleased to invite suitably qualified individuals to apply for a Dissertation Support Award for the 2022-2023 academic year. The award will be tenable at the University of Ghana.
Project Description:
By 2030, non-communicable diseases are predicted to become the leading cause of death in Africa amidst prevailing challenges of infectious diseases, undernutrition, and micronutrient deficiencies. Unhealthy food environments hinder progress in overcoming this double burden of malnutrition. There is increasing evidence for and recognition of the effectiveness of a set of policies that change consumer food environments and enable more nutritious diets. Food systems and public health experts, including the World Health Organisation, refer to them as “Best Buys” for their cost-effectiveness and feasibility for combating the double burden of malnutrition in low- and middle-income countries. Together, these policies aim to inform and empower; guide and influence; incentivize or discourage consumer action within their food environments. These are achieved through bold, and truthful information for all consumers; healthier food availability in public institutions and markets and adjustment of the relative price of foods to equitably promote health and economic value. Globally, an increasing number of countries are implementing these policies, although few from Africa have done so to date.
The HD4HL project aims to build evidence and mobilize multi-stakeholder actions toward developing a policy bundle for healthier and more equitable consumer food environments that reduce the double burden of malnutrition in Ghana. This project is jointly implemented by Ministry of Health, University of Ghana, National Development Planning Commission, Food and Drugs Authority and Coalition of Actors for Public Health Advocacy.
Specifically, the project seeks to:
Develop, validate, and build consensus for a fit-for-local-purpose nutrient profiling system that allows for open, transparent categorization of foods and the determination of how policies will apply to locally available foods in Ghana.
Generate and synthesise gender-responsive evidence on the impacts of policy actions aimed at equitably shifting the relative price, availability, procurement, and marketing of healthy and unhealthy foods.
Facilitate understanding of pathways for effective policy adoption, implementation, and monitoring of outcomes for changing consumer food environments.
Mobilise and strengthen the capacity of a coalition of public, private and social sector stakeholders critical to the effective development and implementation of evidence-based food environment policies.
Strengthen collaboration and sharing of evidence and experience regionally in order to set food policy standards for African nations that may be followed or improved upon.
The successful student’s dissertation will contribute to one of the specific objectives of the HD4HL project (for more information please visit: https://www.hd4hl.org) Only applicants currently enrolled in graduate level (masters) programme at the University of Ghana are eligible to apply.
The Financial Support covers only the research project/dissertation expenses

GENERAL NOTICE
SANCTIONS AGAINST FORMER JCR EXECUTIVES OF COMMONWEALTH HALL
On 18th and 19th August 2022, some former Junior Common Room (JCR) Executives of Commonwealth Hall organised or allowed the organisation of meetings of the Junior Common Room (JCR) of Commonwealth Hall. These meetings provided a platform for the delivery and publication of false, reckless and defamatory statements against Senior Officers of the University, which brought the Offices of the Vice-Chancellor, the Pro Vice- Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs) and the University as a whole into disrepute.
Following a complaint lodged against the affected students, the Disciplinary Board for Junior Members conducted a hearing and established a case of misconduct contrary to the University of Ghana Statutes 2011 (as amended) and the University of Ghana Regulations for Junior Members, 2017, against the former JCR Executives of Commonwealth Hall.
The Disciplinary Board also found that their conduct breached Statutes 42(1)(n) and (o) of the University of Ghana Statutes 2011 (as amended), and Regulations 7.11(c)(xiv) and (xv); and (f)(ii) and (iii)) of the University of Ghana Regulations for Junior Members, 2017.
In this regard, and in accordance with Section 45(g) of the Statutes of the University of Ghana, 2011(as amended), sanctions and decisions have been handed down as follows:
Student | Former position in JCR | Sanction/Decision |
Mr. Paul Anim Inkoom | President | Suspension for 3 academic years* |
Mr. Bright Gati | Vice President | Suspension for 3 academic years |
Mr. Daniel Kofi Boakye | Secretary | Suspension for 3 academic years |
Mr. Daniel Odoi Nyarko | Treasurer | Suspension for 3 academic years |
Mr. Frank Asare | Legal Advisor | Found not guilty on all charges, and accordingly acquitted and discharged |
*Sanction to run concurrently with previous sanction for misconduct for blatantly disobeying the Vice-Chancellor and the Dean of Student Affairs
Mr. Paul Anim Inkoom had earlier been suspended for two (2) academic years after being found guilty of misconduct, contrary to Regulations 7.1(e) and 7.1(g) of the University of Ghana Regulations for Junior Members, 2017.
Students are advised and encouraged to acquaint themselves with the content of the Statutes and the Student Regulations, which are available on the University’s website, as contravention of these Statutes and Regulations will lead to imposition of appropriate sanctions.

The Department of Computer Science, University of Ghana, is holding intensive eight-week (8) professional certificate courses from January 15, 2023. This is open to Senior High Graduates, Tertiary Students, Graduates, Workers and the General Public.
There are various I.T. fields from Database to Digital Marketing.
The University Council has deliberated on recommendations from the Residence Board and the Academic Board regarding changes to student residence arrangements. These changes were requested by Council following repeated incidences of violence involving students.
Council approved the following measures to take effect from the start of the 2022/2023 academic year, which are to prevent future occurrences of violence:
All continuing students of Commonwealth Hall and continuing male students of Mensah Sarbah Hall will not return to these halls, or to any of the traditional halls. They are to be randomly assigned to available rooms in any of the UGEL and private hostels. Continuing female students of Mensah Sarbah Hall and students with special needs in both halls will not be affected by this measure.
Beginning from the 2022/2023 academic year, only Level 100 and graduate students (Masters and PhD level) will be assigned to Mensah Sarbah and Commonwealth Halls. Subsequently, undergraduate students will vacate the halls at the end of Level 100 and may secure accommodation in the private hostels from Level 200 until completion.
Level 100 students who opt for traditional halls will be randomly assigned to the halls.
Progressively, all the traditional halls (Mensah Sarbah, Commonwealth, Volta, Legon and Akuafo halls) will be reserved for Level 100 and graduate students only, culminating into a full in-out-out-out policy by 2025/2026.
Additionally, the University is installing CCTV cameras and Electronic Access control systems in all halls to improve upon security.
All students are to take note of these arrangements. Further details on these will be announced before the beginning of the 2022/2023 academic year.

As you may be aware, University of Ghana did not implement the fee increases approved by Parliament for the 2019/2020 academic year. The main reason for deferment of the fee increases at the time was to avoid exacerbating the financial impact on parents of the pandemic which had just begun.
However, due to the increasing cost of operations and the fact that Parliament has not as at today, 13th December 2022 approved fees for the 2022/2023 academic year, it has become necessary for the University to implement the 2019/2020 approved fees as an interim measure.
Below are additional costs that have been included as approved by the respective student governance bodies, and endorsed by the University Council:
GRASAG Development Levy – GHS 250
GRASAG 75th Anniversary Legacy Project – GHS 100
SRC Development Levy – GHS 100
By an order from the Courts, a Reprographic Fee of GHS 5 per student has been included in the fees.
Residential fees have also been increased, and an additional one-time electronic access fee of GHS 300 each is being charged to residents of the traditional halls (Volta, Commonwealth, Mensah Sarbah, Akuafo and Legon halls), as contribution towards the cost of installation and maintenance of electronic access control systems at the halls to enhance security.
Please be informed that the fee schedules published are provisional and the schedules and amounts to be paid will be updated once fees for the 2022/2023 academic year are approved by Parliament.
The University of Ghana counts on your continued support.
The provisional fee schedules are displayed on the University’s website.
Thank you.

ACCREDITATION OF PROGRAMMES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GHANA
Management of the University of Ghana has noted various media statements in the past week, regarding the status of accreditation of programmes run by the University. These statements are based on the 2020 Auditor-General’s report.
Management reassures the University community and all our stakeholders that the majority of programmes currently being run at the University, at both undergraduate and graduate level are either fully accredited, or in the process of having their accreditation renewed. The University has been working closely with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), to streamline processes in both institutions to ensure that all programmes in the University are restored to good standing within the shortest possible time, and also to rework the structures and procedures for accreditation of programmes. Key developments in this regard are the establishment of a desk in the Office of the Registrar dedicated to accreditation-related matters, as well as continued work towards the automation of accreditation processes.
We assure our students and former students, as well as all stakeholders that all certificates issued by the University of Ghana remain valid, and we commit to work towards regularizing the accreditation status of all our programmes in the short term, and working towards streamlining and automating the accreditation system in the long term.

Module 2 – Conceptual Model Development
It is a known fact in modeling that a numerical model is as good as the conceptual model from which it has been developed. A good numerical model must have been properly conceptualized based on sound field data. This module will treat the rudiments of conceptual model development, the data requirements, and the limitations. The following topics will be treated:
Module 3: Mathematical Foundation and the Numerical Code
All numerical models are based on a set of equations formulated on the basis of physical principles. In the case of numerical groundwater models, the central principle is the Darcy law. Understanding the basic mathematical foundation of a numerical model and the related assumptions is critical to proper selection of an appropriate numerical code for a particular application. Knowing the mathematical basis of the numerical codes is an important component of an applied groundwater modelling course. This module will therefore treat:
Module 4: Numerical Model Development
Having developed a good conceptual model based on the best available data, the next stage is to convert the conceptual model into a numerical model. Understanding the various available codes and their underlying assumptions, and clearly understanding the objectives of the modelling endeavor are critical towards developing a good numerical model from a good conceptual model. The Modules 1, 2, and 3 are essential pre-requisites to this module. This module will entail the following components:
Module 5: Model Calibration and Validation
It is only calibrated and validated models that can be used for scenario analysis to facilitate decision making processes. A model that has been set up (under steady state or transient state conditions) must be calibrated by adjusting the data of the input parameters until the model computer data satisfactorily matches the field monitored data of the hydraulic head, flow etc. This module will treat:
Module 6. Forecasting and Uncertainty Analysis
The objective of most modelling assignments is for forecasting the impacts of various management scenarios together with natural fluctuations in climatic conditions. In the process of undertaking model forecasts, it is important to assess the level of uncertainty so that the results are placed in the appropriate context. The components of this module are:

UNIVERSITY COUNCIL DECISIONS ON CLASHES BETWEEN STUDENTS OF COMMONWEALTH AND MENSAH SARBAH HALLS
The University Council, at its meeting on Thursday, 11th August, 2022, discussed the report of an investigative committee on the clashes between students of Commonwealth and Mensah Sarbah Halls that took place on Friday 5th August and Saturday 6th August 2022. Council also discussed past clashes between students of the two halls, the most recent of which occurred on 5th March, 2022.
Council noted that clashes between students of the two halls have become progressively more frequent and violent, and stressed the need for urgent action to stop these clashes and ease the tensions between students of the two halls.
In line with Sections 16 (2) and 22 (1a) of the University of Ghana Act, 2010 (Act 806), and Statute 4 (9)(i) of the University’s statutes, which enjoin the University Council to safeguard the good name and values of the University, and enable the University Council to make arrangements concerning the internal organization of the University which it considers necessary, Council has taken the following decisions:
Management of the University should continue to work on measures to interrogate the root and immediate causes of the tensions between students of Commonwealth and Mensah Sarbah Halls and put in place measures to eliminate these.
Requisite actions should be taken to ensure the success of these measures.
No events organized by students, should be held for the remainder of the 2021/2022 academic year without the express approval of the Dean of Student Affairs.
Students who are offered places in halls of residence should be made to sign undertakings to be of good behaviour.
To ensure accountability of hall officials to University authorities, the Vice-Chancellor should appoint key officers in all halls of residence, based on recommendations from the halls, in a similar way that heads of department are appointed. To this end, a standard procedure for the election/appointment of hall officials should be addressed in the ongoing revisions to the University’s Statutes.
The composition of Commonwealth and Mensah Sarbah Halls should be reviewed.
Management of the two affected halls are to be held accountable for their actions and inactions for the persistent riots.
The Hall Master and Senior Tutor of Commonwealth Hall have not exhibited sufficient willingness and ability to hold students of the hall accountable for their actions in the recent violent clashes. These officers should therefore, in the interim, be relieved of their duties while management works with the security services to investigate the clashes, and works towards finding lasting solutions to the tensions between students of the two halls.
Commonwealth Hall is to be surcharged with the cost of damages to property in the vicinity of Mensah Sarbah Hall, in the recent clashes.
The Junior Common Room (JCR) Presidents of Commonwealth and Mensah Sarbah Halls should be referred to the Disciplinary Committee for Junior Members, for their actions and inactions leading to and after the riots.
Management is in the process of implementing the decisions of Council, and is providing assistance to the Ghana Police Service in their investigations to identify the perpetrators. The Police are assisting management to ensure that the implementation of these actions does not lead to further rioting, and there is therefore a presence of police officers on the University’s Legon campus.
An online portal has been provided for submission of tips, names, documents, pictures and videos that will help bring the perpetrators of the clashes to book. Information should be submitted to: https://ugra.ug.edu.gh/Commonwealth-Sarbahhotline/#/
All submissions to the portal will be kept totally anonymous and risk-free, and members of the University community are encouraged to submit any relevant information.
Management assures members of the University community that it will continue to put in place measures to ensure that academic work and other activities proceed smoothly. Management also provides assurance of its commitment to safeguarding peace and stability on all campuses of the University.

NOTICE: CLASHES BETWEEN STUDENTS OF COMMONWEALTH AND MENSAH SARBAH HALLS

6th Annual WACCBIP Research Conference - July 20-23, 2022
The 6th annual WACCBIP Research Conference from July 20-22, 2022, will be held in the WACCBIP Conference Hall at the University of Ghana and also streamed online simultaneously via Youtube, Zoom and Facebook. The opening ceremony which starts at 9:00am will be chaired by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo with special guest of honour, Dr. Anarfi Asamoa-Baah, Presidential Coordinator for Ghana’s COVID-19 Response Programme.
The WACCBIP Research Conference is an annual showcase of world-class research conducted by WACCBIP fellows and members of the Centre’s international faculty drawn from prestigious institutions worldwide. In line with the theme “Building Forward: Elevating African Research Innovation and Output”, this year’s conference features keynote addresses from global research leaders including Professor Nadia Sam-Agudu, Senior Technical Advisor for Pediatric and Adolescent HIV at the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN), and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Institute of Human Virology, University of Maryland School of Medicine, USA; Dr. Peter Quashie, Deputy Director, Research and Senior Research Fellow at WACCBIP; and Dr. Bismarck Dinko, Senior Lecturer, Department of Biomedical Sciences, School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences, University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho.
WACCBIP has one of the biggest biomedical research training programmes in West Africa, and we are supported by the Government of Ghana through the World Bank African Centres of Excellence project and Wellcome through the DELTAS Africa initiative. Since its establishment in 2014, WACCBIP has provided fellowships to 182 Master’s students, 102 PhD students, and 29 Postdoctoral fellows from 15 different African countries. WACCBIP’s research has contributed significantly to the response to the current COVID-19 pandemic in Ghana through the generation of real-time data on genomic sequencing and sero-prevalence studies. This work has provided key information on the prevalence of COVID-19 and the distribution of SARS-CoV-2 variants to better inform public health interventions, including infection control measures and vaccine deployment.
The three-day conference provides a valuable opportunity to create direct pathways for the young scientists trained at the Centre to connect with world-renowned scientists and industry professionals. The conference will also showcase new scientific knowledge and novel applications of technology, which could lead to the development of new disease diagnostic tools, drugs, and vaccines. The conference will include both in-person and live virtual/online streaming presentations and will attract more than 350 participants from top research institutions & industries in Africa, Europe, and the U.S.A.
The Office of Research, Innovation, and Development, of the University of Ghana in partnership with Impact Hub Accra and Imperial College London, with support from the British Council, is ending this year's "Innovation for African Universities Program,” dubbed “Connecting Accra Project.” The programme has been resident at the University of Ghana Business School Innovation and Incubation Hub (The UGBS NEST) since its launch in May 2022. The initiative has helped students to build viable products and services, and also developed transformational business models for the future through technical assistance to refine business ideas.
Connecting Accra Project provided an opportunity for the Office of Research, Innovation, and Development to respond to the needs of student innovators and their personal and professional development. The programme aimed to empower students to engage in creativity, purposeful play, and innovation as preparation for engaged, global citizenship that addresses the world’s big challenges. It quickly became a place where over 100 students comprising 18 teams applied their studies and interests to real-world problems and created business solutions to succeed beyond the University.
The teams have created mainly digital businesses in some major industries, including:
The benefits for participants include personalized education and coaching through advisors, classes, operational support for legal and financial options, and guidance on grant opportunities. There is also an opportunity for the top three emerging winners to receive a Startup Mentorship package from Impact Hub.
Join us for the upcoming finale, where the top three teams will pitch their ideas to a live audience at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27, 2022. The venue is the ISSER Conference Center, University of Ghana.

Policy Conference: Policies for a sustainable rural transformation in Africa
Organized by the Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA) in collaboration with the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER), both of the University of Ghana, and the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA), Germany, this first MIASA policy conference on “Policies for a sustainable rural transformation in Africa” is meant to provide a space for exchange between researchers, policymakers, development practitioners, and other stakeholders in rural development to present and discuss the most recent policy-relevant research findings.
Date: June 22-23, 2022
Venue: ISSER Conference Facilities, University of Ghana
To register, please click here
The program outline can be accessed here.
Concept and contents
Africa’s rural areas have been in a process of continuous change, in particular since the economic reforms of the 1980s and 1990s. In a context of rapid population growth and rural-urban migration, rural livelihoods in many places have changed significantly. They have diversified and farming has become much more commercialized. Yet, smallholder agriculture remains the mainstay of the rural economy and, despite some progress, poverty remains widespread and food security is often not guaranteed. With the population projected to double by 2050, demographic pressure will be reinforced and climate change will massively aggravate the pressure on natural resources, be it land, water or forests. Accelerated rural development, including increased agricultural productivity, that uses natural resources sustainably and protects the environment, in particular remaining forests, is needed. In other words, a sustainable rural transformation is required.
Achieving such a transformation will require developing a vision of this transformation, setting the right priorities, and managing well the potential trade-offs between rural economic progress, on the one hand, and social progress and environmental objectives, on the other hand. It also requires inclusiveness and gender equality. Often, the policy-relevant evidence that research provides on key questions of rural development in Africa is fragmented and comes in bits and pieces. One aim of this conference is therefore to bring together bigger research projects and initiatives and put together a program that goes well beyond a series of paper presentations. We target in particular policymakers and development practitioners.
We plan to have coherent thematic sessions that may include one or several contributions from larger research efforts/projects or be organized by one institution or project. We might then “fill” these sessions with contributed papers. Further, we plan to have keynotes, a high-level policy panel, and a poster session with designated discussants for each of the presented posters. The main issues include, but are not limited to:
- Commercialization, large-scale (foreign) investments
- Agricultural Global Value Chains
- (Intra-) African trade and agriculture
- Contract farming schemes
- Demography, migration, rural-urban interactions
- Climate change and rural development
