Entry requirement for admissions of students:

 

Admission Requirements

Candidates must have a good first degree (at least Second-Class Lower Division).

Students who meet the minimum criteria may be invited to write an entrance examination and present themselves for a selection interview.  English is the medium of instruction and candidates are expected to demonstrate proficiency in speaking and writing English compatible with the demands and exigencies of a Master’s Degree.

 

MA in International Affairs – (Full Time Programme)

The programe for this degree covers a period of twelve (12) months from the date of registration.  Students are required to take a minimum of four (4) credits, each of which carries three (3) credits in each of the two (2) semesters. 

In partial fulfillment of a Master’s Degree in International Affairs, each student must submit a dissertation of not more than twenty thousand (20,000) words.

The regulations on examinations, writing and presentation of dissertations and general requirements for prospective candidates are contained in the Graduate Handbook published by the Dean of School of Graduate Studies.  Students are advised to obtain copies for guidance.

 

M.A. in International Affairs (Part-Time Programmme)

The twenty-four (24) month progrmme is a part-time Evening Programme, tailored to the needs of those who must combine work with study.  It is organized along the same line as the full time MA (12 month) programme in International Affairs.  The programme runs over four (4) semesters with lectures on weekdays from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm and follows the normal university calendar of thirteen (13) weeks each for teaching one (1) week for revision, and two (2) weeks for examination.

 

Admission requirements and progression in the PhD programme are provided hereunder:

 

Candidates applying with a first degree

i. Candidates with a good first degree (at least, a Second Class) may apply for admission into the PhD programme.

ii. The first-degree holder applicants will be given conditional admission letters by the School of Graduate Studies.

iii. Candidate shall take the prescribed Level 600 courses during the first year. 

iv. On completion of the Level 600 courses, candidates will be assessed at an interview by a panel made up of the graduate committee of LECIAD, and those who are successful would progress to the PhD level;

v. However, candidates who are not able to progress to the PhD level may opt for the MA degree programme and upon successful completion will be awarded MA in International Affairs degree.

vi. Candidates who progress to the PhD level will be given conditional admission, and will be required to take the Level 700 courses.

 

Candidates applying with a Master’s degree (e.g., MA/MSc/MPA/MBA/MPhil

i. Candidates with a master’s degree from the humanities may apply into the PhD programme.

ii. All candidates shall be given a conditional admission letter by the School of Graduate Studies.

iii. They shall take the prescribed courses at Level 700 in Year 1 as well as “make-up courses (resit) where necessary in Years 1 and 2.

iv. All candidates with backgrounds other than MA Internal Affairs and MPhil Political Science shall undertake some of the prescribed courses offered at MA in International Affairs as may be determined by the LECIAD Graduate Committee. These candidates shall pass all the prescribed courses in addition to those offered by PhD candidates at Year 1 before they could progress to Year 2.

v. Upon successful completion of Year 1 prescribed courses, candidates shall take the Comprehensive Examination and Research Experiential Learning.

v. Candidates who are successful shall be admitted to the PhD programme by the School of Graduate Studies.

vi). Candidates who are unable to progress to the PhD programme may be given the opportunity to write the MA dissertation and upon successful completion be awarded MA International Affairs.

Full time students will be required to complete their programme in four (4) years while part time students will spend six (6) years.
