Call for Applications for a Funded MPhil Scholarship at the University of Ghana

Starting July 7, 2023 - Ending July 7, 2024

We are pleased to announce a call for application for the award of four (4) MPhil II Scholarships on the broad topic of women’s leadership in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Each scholarship is for  one academic year to cover Part II of the MPhil programme and is tenable at the following Units in the University of Ghana:

· Departments within the School of Social Sciences (Geography and Resource Development, Sociology, Psychology, Social Work, Political Science and Economics)

· Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies (IESS),

· Department of Food Process Engineering (FPE), and

· Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER)

As a successful candidate, you will be part of the research team on the project “TranSforming InSTitutions to Advance Women LeadeRS (SISTARS) in Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics: Lessons from Ghana and Kenya” funded by IDRC. The project aims to contribute to advancing women in STEM in industry and academia through the development of innovative strategies that will promote women to leadership positions. Using Ghana and Kenya as case studies, the project seeks to understand why women find it difficult to rise to leadership positions in their STEM careers.

Under the guidance of the project team members and supervisors in the units listed above, you will undertake an independent research that fits within the theme of the project, participate in research workshops, networking and other project events and publish at least one peer reviewed paper in an impact factor journal.

Details of Scholarship Package

The scholarship, which is tenable within the University of Ghana, and at any of the above listed institutes/departments, shall cover tuition, research and monthly stipend for the second academic year of the MPhil programme.

Eligibility Criteria

We invite applications from candidates with the following credentials: 

· Must be an MPhil student already enrolled in the listed units at the University of Ghana

· Must be proceeding to MPhil II

  • Proven experience with both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies; excellent skills in conducting and analyzing in-depth interviews and field observations; familiarity with the handling and analysis of legal documents is desirable.

· Must have an interest in transdisciplinary research.

· Must be able to work independently.

  • Excellent English speaking, reading, and writing skills.
