About the Department
The Department of Mathematics at the University of Ghana is a dynamic hub for research and education in pure and applied mathematics. Our team of experts in pure mathematics explore the newest and most exciting research topics in number theory, algebra, geometry, analysis, PDEs, and combinatorics. As for applied mathematics, we actively seek significant connections with other fields that could inspire new and valuable mathematical discoveries. Through innovative mathematical reasoning, we strive to achieve fresh insights and applications. Our applied math specialists concentrate on computational science, numerical analysis, financial mathematics, and theoretical physics.

Dr Abdullah Abubakar, from the Department of Mathematics at the University of Ghana’s College of Basic and Applied Sciences, has been awarded the prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Award for the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation in the Sciences. The honour was conferred at the 2026 Vice-Chancellor’s Academic Awards Ceremony (Day 2: Sciences), held on 19th March 2026 at the Great Hall, University of Ghana.
