TAKORADI CITY CAMPUS HOSTS MAIDEN CAMPUS WEEK CELEBRATION

The Takoradi City Campus of the College of Education, University of Ghana, successfully organized its maiden Campus Week Celebration (CWC) from Tuesday, 29th July to Sunday, 3rd August 2025. The week-long event was held under the theme: “Campus Connect: Empowering Knowledge, Well-being, and Community Service.”

Opening Activities: Clean-Up and Launch

Activities began on Tuesday with a clean-up exercise led by the regular students and supported by staff. This exercise set a strong tone of community service and environmental responsibility—values that underpinned the entire celebration.

The official launch of the CWC took place on Wednesday, 30th July 2025. The ceremony was chaired by Dr. Wiafe-Akenten, Vice-Dean of Students. The Special Guest of Honour was Prof. Charity Sylvia Akotia, Chairperson of the City Campuses Implementation Team. The event was opened by Prof. Bernardin Senadza, the outgoing Acting Principal of the Campus, who warmly welcomed all guests and participants. He encouraged full engagement in the activities lined up for the celebration and commended the organizing team for their initiative.

Level 200 students and faculty of the UGRC Appropriate Technology class at the University of Ghana Takoradi City Campus (UGTCC) took a field trip to the Takoradi office of the Ghana Regional Appropriate Technology Industrial Service (GRATIS) Foundation on 14th July 2025. The trip provided a practical opportunity for students and faculty to observe and understand the operations of GRATIS Foundation and to apply concepts learned in class the knowledge gained from the trip. 

The Western Regional Manager of GRATIS Foundation, Mr. Benjamin Bannerman and his Deputy, Mr. Eric Wiredu, along with their colleagues warmly welcomed the class to their premises. During subsequent interactions students and faculty learnt the history, vision, and mission of the Foundation. GRATIS was established in 1995 by the Government of Ghana with financial and technical support from the European Union and the Canadian International Development Agency. It strives to be a leading designer, manufacturer, and supplier of industrial technology in Ghana. Its mission is to consistently design, build, and distribute efficient, appropriate technological machines to clients for use in small and medium enterprises across the country.

Mr. Bannerman and his colleagues patiently and eloquently guided the class through the different departments(eg. the Metal Machining Shop, the Fabrication Shop, and the Welding Shop. These sections of the Foundation are effectively organised and operated by young men and women who are undergoing training or employed full-time by GRATIS, supervised by senior staff. Some are graduates of universities and polytechnics; others are Senior and Junior High School leavers receiving training.

Takoradi City Campus Conducts Outreach to Takoradi Senior High School
On Tuesday, 20th May 2025, the Takoradi City Campus (TCC) conducted an outreach programme at Takoradi Senior High School (Tadisco), engaging with all final-year students, both male and female. The event, jointly organized by the staff of Tadisco Senior High School and Takoradi City Campus, aimed to provide students with comprehensive information regarding academic opportunities at TCC.
Takoradi City Campus Visits Shama Senior High School in the Western Region of Ghana
On the bright morning of May 13, 2025, the serene atmosphere of Shama Senior High School was filled with excitement and anticipation. At exactly 9:30AM, a distinguished team from Takoradi City Campus arrived on the school grounds, greeted by eager students and faculty members. The representatives— Ms. Bernardine Agyeman, the Campus Administrator, Mrs. Mercy Obeng, a Principal Administrative Assistant together with Mrs. Grace Arthur and Mr. Terry Nyarkoh, a National Service Person —had come with an important mission: to present the academic requirements for admission to their prestigious institution.
Takoradi City Campus Matriculation Ceremony for 2024-2025 Cohort
On February 22, 2025, an air of excitement and anticipation filled the Smart Classroom at Takoradi City Campus as Level 100 students embarked on a significant academic milestone—their matriculation ceremony. This event, marking their formal entry into the institution, was held virtually, allowing students to join their colleagues across Ghana in an interconnected celebration of their academic journey.
TAKORADI CITY CAMPUS VISITS FIJAI SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
On Wednesday, June 26th, 2024, the University of Ghana, Takoradi City Campus, visited the Form Three students of Fijai Senior High School as part of their efforts to enhance visibility in the Western Region. The event was attended by several key representatives from the Takoradi City Campus, including Ms. Bernardine Agyeman, Senior Assistant Registrar and Campus Administrator; Mr. Michael Asante Darko, Principal Accounting Assistant; Mrs. Mercy Obeng, Principal Administrative Assistant; Mrs. Vida Korkor Amartey, Senior Organiser; and Mrs. Grace Arthur. Other staff in attendance included Ms. Angilet Mary Abban and Ms. Mary Amoah.
VISITS AHANTAMAN GIRLS’ SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
As part of the Takoradi City Campuses’ efforts to increase visibility in the Western Region of Ghana, officers from the University of Ghana’s Academic Affairs Directorate under the auspices of the Campus visited Ahantaman Girls’ Senior High School in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis on Wednesday, June 12th, 2024.
OPEN DAY

The University of Ghana Takoradi City Campus as part of its sensitization exercises held a Float and Open Day respectively on Thursday, the 18th and Friday, the 19th of January 2024. The Team from the University of Ghana Takoradi City Campus was escorted by some Police Officers through the Takoradi Township. They disseminated information to various stakeholders regarding the taught program on the Campus and invited stakeholders to the Open Day which took place the very next day.

The Open Day was chaired by Professor Jemima Anderson of the English Department, who is also the Director of the UG-Pan African Doctoral Academy (UG-PADA) and who served as the representative of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo.

Dr. Robert Lawrence Afutu-Kotey, Coordinator of the Learning Centre at UGTCC in his opening remarks indicated the importance of establishing a City Campus of choice in the Western Region to provide sterling quality education to prospective students within the region and its surrounding environs.

Professor Bernardin Senadza, the Acting Principal of the Takoradi City Campus

Professor Bernardin Senadza, the Acting Principal of the Takoradi City Campus extolled the benefits of studying at the UG Takoradi City Campus (UGTCC). He also encouraged prospective students to take full advantage of the opportunities presented to them through the establishment of a City Campus in Takoradi and Kumasi. He explained that the only program currently available to students was the Bachelor of Science in Administration with diverse areas of specialization such as Banking and Finance, Insurance, Public Administration, and Health Services Administration to name a few. These courses would be taught by renowned faculty of the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS).

Prof. Jemima Anderson further underscored the importance and benefits that would accrue to stakeholders who opt to join Team UGTCC. She provided information on admission quotas, cut-off points for admission, and the opportunity for students who do not meet the requisite cut-off point used at the main Campus to enjoy the same level and quality of education as students on the main campus are afforded. She encouraged prospective students to take up the offer of admission since the Management of the City Campus has put in place measures to house students who express interest in hostel facilities albeit, off the Campus.

Prof. Anderson encouraged all present to encourage potential students to apply to the Takoradi City Campus.

UG DAY

At the thanksgiving service held as part of the 75th-anniversary celebrations of the University of Ghana, the Vice Chancellor declared October 11, 2023, as Wear UG Day to Commemorate the day on which the University was outdoored. October 11, also doubled as the International Day of the Girl Child- a day set aside by the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate the power and potential of girls around the world. The University of Ghana Takoradi City Campus (UGTCC) celebrated this special occasion with Ahantaman Girls’ Senior High School on the topic, Body Image and Self-esteem, and invited some alumni of UGTCC who joined staff to celebrate the day in the colorful UG@75 cloth.

Open Day

The students and staff of Ahantaman Girls’ Senior High School welcomed the UGTCC team to the beautiful school environment upon arrival. In his opening remarks, the Academic Coordinator of the University of Ghana Takoradi City Campus, Dr. Robert Lawrence Afutu-Kotey who represented the Principal, Prof. Benardin Senadza spoke about the significant progress the University of Ghana has achieved in the area of gender parity. Dr Afutu-Kotey advised the students to consider UGTCC and the range of programmes on offer, in their choice of university.

Mrs. Vida Korkor Amartey, a Senior Organizer at UGTCC spoke to the students about Body Image, highlighting its meaning, the different types of body image, contributors of negative body image and ways to overcome negative perceptions of body image. Touching on the topic of self-image, Mrs. Mercy Afua Obeng, a Principal Administrative Assistant spoke to the students about the significance of self-esteem in the lives of young ladies. Mrs Obeng further elaborated on how to build confidence and self-esteem and advised the students to appreciate how beautifully and wonderfully they have been created, which they must cherish.

The Staff and students of Ahantaman Senior High School expressed their appreciation for the gesture while admitting that the topic chosen for the occasion was of great significance and influence to young ladies.

At the end of the programme, the UGTCC Team presented packs of water and University of Ghana prospectus to students of Ahantaman Girls’ Senior High School.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo together with other officers of the University of Ghana have paid a courtesy call on the Paramount Chief (Omanhen) of the Essikado (British Sekondi) Traditional Area, Nana Kobina Nketsia V, at his Palace in the Western Region of Ghana.

The purpose of the visit was to officially introduce herself to the Omanhen following her appointment and induction as the first female Vice-Chancellor of the premier university in Ghana. Professor Nana Aba Amfo sought the Omanhen’s support to ensure a successful tenure and operations related to the successful establishment of the University of Ghana Takoradi City Campus.

Open Day

Nana Kobina Nketsia V, on his part lauded the initiative taken by the University and pledged his support towards the implementation of the initiative which would be the first of its kind in the Western Region. He indicated that it was a welcome initiative that was long overdue, and gifted the Vice-Chancellor with a copy of his book on ‘’African Culture in Governance and Development: the Ghana Paradigm.’’
