VISITS AHANTAMAN GIRLS’ SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

As part of the Takoradi City Campuses’ efforts to increase visibility in the Western Region of Ghana, officers from the University of Ghana’s Academic Affairs Directorate under the auspices of the Campus visited Ahantaman Girls’ Senior High School in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis on Wednesday, June 12th, 2024. 

The attendees included Professor Benardin Senadza, Acting Principal of the Takoradi City Campus; Ms. Bernardine Agyeman, Senior Assistant Registrar and Campus Administrator of the Takoradi City Campus; Mrs. Yvonne Lartey, a Senior Assistant Registrar and Head of the Academic and Student Affairs and Mr. Fred Yourkuu, also a Senior Assistant Registrar and Head of the Teaching and Examinations Unit of the University of Ghana, joined the Takoradi City Campus in this outreach session.

Other staff who accompanied the party included; Mrs. Mercy Obeng, Mr. Asante Darko and Mrs. Grace Arthur, staff of the Takoradi City Campus; and Miss Angilet Mary Abban, a National Service Person.

Mrs. Ernestina Kankam Hammond, the Headmistress of Ahantaman Girls’ Senior High School, warmly welcomed the representatives from the University of Ghana and handed the steering of the day’s events to Ms. Bernardine Agyeman who encouraged the students to learn hard so they can secure their preferred programmes of choice at the University of Ghana.

The Acting Principal, Professor Benardin Senadza in his opening remarks informed the students of the available programmes offered at the University of Ghana and in particular the provision of a sterling quality education in the Western Region under the auspices of the premier University of Ghana. 

Mrs. Yvonne Lartey in addressing the students, gave a general overview of the enabling environment provided by the University of Ghana, Legon at its five main campuses. She further talked about the admission process of the University of Ghana- sharing information on how the application process should be undertaken by prospective students, how and where they are to apply, and shared the link (https://apply.ug.edu.gh/admissions/undergrad/login) for the application. 

To facilitate the application process, Mrs. Lartey elaborated on the purchase of the e-voucher, which is a mandatory step for all prospective students. She stated that the e-voucher can be purchased through two primary methods: bank payments and mobile money,detailing the steps for each method. She emphasized that the e-voucher serves as a prerequisite for starting the online application and only applicants who have purchased the e-voucher can access the online application portal. She also discussed the criteria used by the University during its selection process, the guiding steps to adhere to during the admission application process, and the dos and don'ts of the application process.

Mr. Fred Yourkuu, then enlightened the students on a myriad of topics such as the grading system at the University of Ghana, the different academic disciplines, and the programs offered within those disciplines. He also discussed the cut-off points for undergraduate admission into each program, as well as the subject requirements for each program. Professor Benardin then added the cut-off points for the University of Ghana Takoradi City Campus for undergraduate admissions. He spoke extensively about the advantages of pursuing an undergraduate degree at the University of Ghana Takoradi City Campus.

The students were given the opportunity to ask questions. Their questions ranged from available programmes at the University for students who are currently studying elective I.C.T.; programmes available to students studying costing; the difference between regular and distance learning; the location of the Takoradi City Campus, availability of accommodation at the Takoradi City Campus, and if the Campus had the same facilities and amenities as the main campus. These questions were adequately answered by officers present.

The event ended with a vote of thanks by the School Prefect of Ahantaman Girls’ Senior High School.
