The Distance Education programme is a hybrid system of E-learning and face-to-face interaction under the auspices of the Department of Distance Education. The Learning Centre also offers mature access courses which leads into the Bachelor of Arts or Diploma Distance Education programmes.

UGTCC also offers admissions into the Bachelor of Science in Administration program with options in Accounting, Banking and Finance, Insurance, Marketing and Public Administration. Other available areas of specialization are Human Resource Management, E-commerce, Customer Management and Health Services Administration. The various courses are taught by our renowned scholars to ensure value addition to our students’ experience.

History of Takoradi City Campus

The University of Ghana Takoradi City Campus (UGTCC) was established in 2021 following the University Council’s approval to establish City Campuses for the premier universities in Kumasi and Takoradi. The City Campus aims at delivering high-quality education to the teeming high school graduates.

The Centre, originally named European Hospital was acquired by the Europeans in the 1900s purposely for an infirmary for the Europeans.  The place was subsequently used as a hotel and named Hillcrest Hotel after a new place was acquired as European Hospital.

After the Europeans had left the country, the first president of the Republic of Ghana, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah dedicated the place to workers for an adequate education. The place then became fully operational in 1962 as the Institute of Public Education at a time when Mass Education was high on the agenda of the government of the day. The Centre, striving on its rich experience in literacy, became the main agent for the implementation of programmes and also took on additional responsibility/roles to the extent that its name was changed to the Institute of Adult Education in 1965/66.

Aside from the liberal studies, the Centre was also restructured to run GCE ‘O’ and ‘A’ Level classes until they were phased out in the late 1990s. Over the period, the main educational activity at the Centre has been the Distance Education (DE) and Mature Access programmes of the University of Ghana. Also on offer are short courses in Digital Literacy, Business Communication and Guidance and Counselling.

In addition to the programmes offered under the DE and Mature Access programmes, the University of Ghana Takoradi City Campus offers Bachelor of Science in Administration with options in Accounting, Banking and Finance, Insurance, Public Administration, Health Services Administration, Human Resource Management, Marketing, E-Commerce and Customer Management.

The administrative responsibilities of the Centre from 1962 until 2021 were managed by the following personalities: Mr. E. A. Addo (Principal) 1962 – 1965; Mr. Joe Opare-Abetia (Principal) 1965 – 1968; Mr. A. M. Kusi (Principal) 1968 – 1972; Mr. John Okoe Barnor (Principal) 1972 – 1977; Dr. Peter K.
