UG FASU Team Pays Courtesy Call on Vice-Chancellor

The University of Ghana contingent that participated in the 10th Federation of African Universities Sports (FASU) Games at the Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya has paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo to present the medals and trophy won.

Presenting the Team to the Vice-Chancellor, Mr. Augustine Amissare, the Senior Assistant Registrar at the Sports Directorate on behalf of the Director of Sports expressed appreciation to University Management for the support offered the Team to participate in the Games.

In his briefing, Mr. Amissare informed the Vice-Chancellor that the University of Ghana won a total of sixteen (16) medals made up of four (4) gold, three silver (3) and three (3) bronze in Athletics as well as four (4) silver and three (3) bronze medals in racket games. He added that UG performed better this year as juxtaposed by the number of disciplines in the 2016 and 2018 editions held in Johannesburg, South Africa and Mekelle, Ethiopia respectively. UG placed 10th out of 30 Universities in the individual ranking while Ghana was ranked 3rd with fifteen (15) gold, twenty (20) silver and fourteen (14) bronze medals.

He added that UG’s 4X100m Relay Team was selected to represent Ghana at the Annual International Invitational Relay event in Benin City, Nigeria in June, 2022. The team won three (3) silver medals and one (1) bronze medal in three events. In addition, Saminu Abdul- Rasheed has been called to join Ghana’s 4x100m Relay Team which includes UG alumnus Benjamin Kwaku Azamati for the 2022 Commonwealth Games to be held at Birmingham, England from 28th July to 8th August, 2022. They were all presented to the Vice-Chancellor as well.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo congratulated the athletes and staff of the Sports Directorate for making University of Ghana proud and significantly improving on the 9th edition performance. Professor Amfo reiterated her excitement to always meet and interact with the Sports Directorate and the athletes. She added that the feat should serve as a springboard for the Sports Directorate for greater exploits in the future and athletes should continue to serve as good ambassadors for the University.

“This achievement should spur the Sports Directorate and athletes to reach greater heights in future competitions. The athletes selected to represent Ghana in international championships should hold high the flag of UG as the University prides itself in high academics and co-curricular activities because we believe strongly in the holistic development of the human being. The University has people with varying talents and it is my vision that these talents are identified and harnessed to become useful to the University, Ghana and the world.”
