UNIVERSITY OF GHANA TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FEDERATION OF AFRICA UNIVERSITY SPORTS 3X3 BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The University of Ghana will be participating in the 5th FASU 3x3 Championship in Johannesburg, South Africa, from June 23-25, 2023. The tournament is being organized by the Federation of African University Sports (FASU), and it will feature 13 other teams from universities across the continent.

The University of Ghana team is one of the favourites to win the tournament. They have been training hard in preparation for the event, and they are confident that they can bring home both gold medals.

"We are excited to be participating in the FASU 3x3 Championship," said Hannah, the captain of the UG female basketball team. "We have been working hard, and we are confident that we can win the tournament."

The FASU 3x3 Championship is an biennial basketball tournament that brings together universities from across the African continent. The event provides a platform for student athletes to showcase their skills in the fast-paced and dynamic 3x3 basketball format, which features three players on each team, competing on a half-court with a single hoop. This exciting variation of basketball demands speed, agility, and precision, making it an exhilarating spectator sport.

"We are looking forward to representing Ghana at the FASU 3x3 Championship," said Samuel Appiah, The captain of the male football team. "We want to show the world that Ghana has some of the best basketball players in Africa."

The FASU 3x3 Championship is a great opportunity for the University of Ghana team to regain its prominent position in FASU Basketball rankings having won the basketball championship back-to-back in 2016 and 2018 respectively. It will also be a chance for them to test themselves against some of the best 3x3 teams in Africa.

"We are looking forward to the challenge," said Eric Ankamah Agyapong, The UG Basketball Coach. "We know that it will be a tough tournament, but we are confident that we can compete with the best teams in Africa."

The University of Ghana team is hoping to bring home both gold medals from the FASU 3x3 Championship. They have the talent and the determination to do it, and they will be a force to be reckoned with in Johannesburg.

The Director of Sports and Leader of Delegation, Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu, thanked the University Senior Management for their continuous support for sports development in the University. He was grateful for them providing the needed resources to enable the team make it to the competition. “We are hoping for a good performance in Johannesburg because the Coaches and Players have worked hard for this” he noted.

The FASU 3×3 Basketball Challenge, held biennially, provides African university students with a prestigious platform to compete at a high level. Besides determining the African champions, the winning team will secure a spot at the FISU 3×3 Basketball World Cup, elevating their basketball journey to an international stage.
