UG DREAMS GOLD AHEAD OF GUSA CROSS COUNTRY

The University of Ghana Cross Country Team will participate in the 24th Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Cross Country Competition at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Sunyani from 31st October to 3rd November, 2019.

Preparation

All twenty athletes (both male and female) representing University of Ghana (UG) were selected based on merit during the 2019/2020 Inter-Hall Cross Country Competition. The athletes have since been in a non-residential camping.

The team has being training on campus and at Larteh on the Akuapem Ridge in the Eastern Region. UG, the only University in the competition to have won it six (6) times consecutively (2009-2014) according to their Coach, William Awunime Akuka are well positioned to win Gold after four (4) years of waiting.

“The team is well placed to win Gold at this year’s competition. The athletes have shown extra commitment and determination in putting us back where we belong. We want to make a statement ahead of the GUSA Games in January 2020 by winning our first Gold medal to motivate and challenge other UG Teams.”

Coach Akuka who is the record holder of the competition (36 minutes) when it was 12km before it was changed to 10km for both male and female is calling for the support and prayers of the University Community as they relish to win Gold.

Medicals

All the athletes have gone through medical screening at the University of Ghana Hospital to ascertain their health status as part of the prerequisite for participating in the competition.

Participating Universities

Nine Universities will participate in the 24th edition which is under the patronage of Professor Harrison Kwame Dapaah, Vice-Chancellor of UENR. The Universities are University of Ghana (UG), University of Cape Coast (UCC), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Education, Winneba (UEW), University for Development Studies (UDS), University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) and University of Energy and Natural Resources (UNER)

Team UG will depart Legon on Thursday, 31st October, 2019 for Sunyani.
