AHP organizes a two-day Pre-Application Workshop for 2020-21 Postdoctoral Competition

 

The African Humanities Program (AHP) of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) in conjunction with the University of Ghana is organizing a two-day pre-application workshop for the 2020-2021 Postdoctoral Competition. The virtual workshop which began todayNovember 5, 2020 is aimed at training scholars in the humanities who wish to become Fellows of the program.

 

Giving the opening address at today’s session, Chairperson of the Steering Interim Committee of the African Humanities Program who also doubles as the Pro Vice-Chancellor (ASA) of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo  appreciated participants for taking part in the event and for demonstrating their willingness to join the program.  According to her not only is the involvement of African scholars in the program going to help them work on projects of interest for them, but it will largely "encourage and enable the production of new knowledge”. She therefore encouraged participants to appreciate the opportunity to add to the body of knowledge in their respective disciplines

 

Today’s session of the workshop was facilitated by four senior scholars and reviewers of the Program. They are Prof. Oyeniyi Okunoye from Obafemi Awolowo UniversityNigeria; Prof.  Yaw Sekyi Baidoo of University of EducationGhana; Prof. Bola Udegbe from University of IbadanNigeria; and Professor. Sr. Dominica Dipio from Makerere UniversityUganda. 

 

Participants for the workshop were from University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast, and Suyani Technical University.

Day two of the workshop is expected to be spent on reviewing draft applications from the participants and providing individualized feedback.

 

The African Humanities Program (AHP) of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS)  has the goal to encourage and enable the production of new knowledge and new approaches to research in the humanities. It seeks to strengthen the capacity of early career researchers in African universities, and to advance the humanities by establishing networks for scholarly communication throughout Africa and with Africanists worldwide. Scholars who qualify to apply for the postdoctoral fellowships are individuals who are affiliated to universities in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda.
