Dr Abdullah Abubakar, from the Department of Mathematics at the University of Ghana’s College of Basic and Applied Sciences, has been awarded the prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Award for the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation in the Sciences. The honour was conferred at the 2026 Vice-Chancellor’s Academic Awards Ceremony (Day 2: Sciences), held on 19th March 2026 at the Great Hall, University of Ghana. This honour forms part of the University of Ghana’s annual Vice-Chancellor’s Academic Awards, which celebrate top academic excellence across the sciences.

The award, which recognizes excellence in academic research for the 2024–2025 academic year, was conferred for his PhD thesis titled “A characterization of the alternating group An for n ≥ 8, by its fusion systems over a Sylow 2-subgroup.”  The thesis focuses on group theory and contributes to Aschbacher’s programme, which seeks a simplified proof of the Classification of Finite Simple Groups. The work characterizes the alternating group An  (where n ≥ 8) using fusion systems over its Sylow 2-subgroup, demonstrating rigorous mathematical insight and advancing pure mathematics research at the University of Ghana.

This award highlights Dr Abubakar’s academic excellence and underscores the University of Ghana’s commitment to recognizing outstanding doctoral research in the sciences.

Congratulations, Dr Abdullah Abubakar! Your success is a proud milestone for the Department of Mathematics and serves as a powerful inspiration for the next generation of mathematicians at the University of Ghana.
