The Coastal Ocean Environment Summer School In Nigeria and Ghana (COESSING) is an international collaboration aimed at advancing ocean science in West Africa and furthering ties between scientists in West Africa and elsewhere around the globe. One-week summer schools have been held every year since 2015. We’ve held in-person and virtual schools, hosted in both Ghana and Nigeria. The online schools feature lectures, panels, and tutorials, and the in-person schools focus on hands-on research projects. In 2024, we held an in-person school in Nigeria. Funding has been secured to support four more in-person summer schools, alternating between Ghana (2025, 2027) and Nigeria (2026, 2028). We have also received funding to hold a sister effort in Kenya in 2025 and 2026.
