FREN 104 Basic French Grammar and Formal Written Expressions

Course Content

This course is a continuation of FREN 103. It builds on the Grammar from FREN 103 and its applications in Formal Written Expression. Students will be introduced to formats for business correspondences via text messages, letters, emails (professional and academic), cover letters, and motivation letters. The differences between English and French formats will be discussed. Grammar topics to be treated include Verbs (le passé récent, le passé composé, imparfait, conditionnel présent, impératif), verb negation, Pronouns (Impersonal Pronouns, Simple Relative Pronouns) Demonstrative and Possessive Pronouns, Prepositions, Conjunctions, Active and Passive voice.

FREN 103 Basic French Grammar and Informal Written Expressions

Course Content

This course teaches elementary French Grammar and applies it to language usage. Grammar topics include: Determiners (definite, indefinite, partitive, zero articles), Nouns & Adjectives (gender, number, position), Pronouns (personal, stressed, reflexive), Verb conjugations (indicatif, futur simple, futur proche), simple Adverbs, Prepositions, and Conjunctions. Written Expression will teach students to fill simple forms, write text messages, emails, and letters to family, friends, and peers, engage in social media discussions; write simple postcards; send, accept, and refuse invitations.

FREN 102 ORAL SKILLS AND FRENCH AND FRANCOPHONE STUDIES II

Course Content

This course is a continuation of FREN 101. It seeks to improve the students’ previously acquired level and knowledge of oral French. The content for this part of the course will be drawn from French and Francophone literature. The necessary basic notions of French and Francophone literature will be taught to enable students to fulfill their basic communicative needs when engaging in social interactions. Elementary recordings and adaptations of videos and music will be introduced into the classroom to make the teaching process more practical. 

FREN 101 ORAL SKILLS AND FRENCH AND FRANCOPHONE STUDIES I

Credit Hours - 2

Course Content

This course will equip students with skills that will enable them to communicate in French. The course will be based on selected texts that focus on the culture, language, and civilization of French and Francophone countries. It will deepen language skills: speaking, reading, writing, and listening. It will also involve conversation skills, picture reading, and listening comprehension with an emphasis on oral practice and pronunciation. The course content will focus on the culture, mannerisms, and other dynamic aspects of the French and Francophone ways of life.
