Course Content
This course provides an introduction into French and Francophone literature. It will prepare the students to undertake literary studies. The course will present the history of French literature and of Francophone literature. It will explore the links between French and Francophone literature. The course will also introduce students to notable writers and masterpieces of French and Francophone literature in prose, drama, and poetry.

Course Content
The course comprises Reading skills, writing techniques and written comprehension. Students will be taught various techniques for effective reading of French materials (punctuations, rhythm, liaisons and intonation) and basic written comprehension exercises. This course will apply pronunciation and comprehension techniques introduced to the students in FREN 213 and French usage from FREN 211 in reading exercises. Various essay writing techniques (descriptive, narrative, argumentative) will also be introduced. Writing a summary, report, article, book or film review and text analysis will be taught as part of the syllabus.

Course Content
This course aims at further enhancing the oral skills of students as well as their ability to employ more complex vocabulary and expressions. It seeks to develop their pronunciation skills in order for them to produce the right sounds. It also aims at equipping students with some of the key lexical and grammatical structures for communication in French. Some parts of the course will feature group work, class presentations, RPGs and simulated conversations.

This course comprises two sections: (a) Pronunciation and (b) Comprehension. Students will be taught the French International Phonetic Alphabet which will enable them to transcribe simple and short texts in French. This will also enable them to accurately pronounce French terms. They will also be introduced to comprehension skills through listening to CDs (real-life conversations, movie excerpts, music), engaging in conversation, and presenting short reports orally

Students will be introduced to Translation and basic translation techniques. These include Vinay and Darbelnet’s Translation Procedures namely borrowing, calque, literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalence, and adaptation. They will also be trained to understand and use more complex vocabulary and expressions related to everyday life.

Aspects of Grammar include Verbs (present participle, verbal adjectives, gerund, transitive and intransitive, agreement, subjunctive, past conditional tense, split infinitive), Direct Object Pronouns, Indirect Object Pronouns, Compound Relative Pronouns, Adverbs (manner), Adjectives (comparison, position), Verbal Prepositions, Conjunctions, Connectors, Quantification. The course also covers word registers, vocabulary, and lexis. Other grammar topics include les doubles pronoms, accord du participe passé (avoir), Direct and indirect speech, La concordance des temps, Verbs (subjonctif, plus-que-parfait), Adjectives and Adverbs (la comparaison, le superlatif), Les pronoms Y et EN, Connecteurs et Articulateurs, Hypothèse.
