FREN 372 Introduction to Research Methodology

Course Content

This course will focus on basic research tools in the field of French and Francophone studies. Students will be introduced to research terminology and notions such as qualitative and quantitative methods, literature review or theoretical framework. They will learn to design simplified research proposals on topics related to French and Francophone studies. The course will prepare students for FREN 450 (Long Essay) as well as for graduate studies

FREN 370 Language Immersion I

Credit Hours - 3

Course Content

This is a three-credit long-vacation specially packaged intensive study in a French or Francophone university. In lieu of that, students can undertake a three-credit language immersion course at the University of Ghana during the long vacations between Levels 200 and 300. Students will be required to present a report that will be assessed. The host university will send a report detailing the performance of the student during the programme. 

FREN 336 French For Specific Purposes II

Course Content
This course will concern specific domains of French for specific purposes. French language adequate for use in fields such as hospitality and tourism, air services, and human relations jobs will be the focus of this course. Students will be introduced to specific vocabulary and constructions that are in line with these domains. The idea will be to, through an emphasis on the action-oriented approach, simulate real-life situations for students to have practical ideas about the domains.

FREN 335 French For Specific Purposes I

Course Content

This course is designed for students who have an interest in the teaching of French for specific domains. It aims at giving students some knowledge in the various notions of teaching methodology and practices. A historical overview of all teaching methods and a detailed study of the communicative approach and more recent approaches will be part of the course. 

FREN 334 Teaching French as Foreign Language II

Course Content

This course aims at highlighting key methodologies in the teaching of French (FLE, FOS, FLS, FLM) with particular emphasis on French as a Foreign Language. Particular attention will be given to the idiosyncrasies associated with teaching the French language in a multicultural context like Ghana. The students will be trained to understand basic didactic notions such as: designated public, learning needs, and learning objectives. They will also be equipped with the basic necessary tools in the design of a teaching programme.

FREN 333 Teaching French as a Foreign Language I

Course Content
This course is designed for students who have an interest in the teaching of French as a foreign language. It aims at giving students some knowledge in the various notions of teaching methodology and practices. A historical review of all teaching methods and a detailed study of the communicative approach will be part of the course. The course also highlights the CEFRL.

FREN 332 Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology of French

Course Content
In this course, various aspects of the phonetics and phonology of French will be taught. The course will present various featural descriptions of various segments of the French language. As such, the place and manner of articulation of both consonants and vowels will be critically discussed. Also, the articulatory organs that are involved in the production of these sounds shall be taught. Aspects of the syllable and various phonological processes that are available in French will be discussed. 

FREN 331 Introduction to French Linguistics

Course Content
This course will focus on the main functions of language as a tool for communication, and the main components of Linguistics as a science.  Students will be introduced to the domain of linguistic studies, and the sub-domains that are there within. The distinctions between notions such as ‘langage’, ‘langue’ and ‘parole’ will feature prominently in the discussions. Further basic distinctions such as those between syntagmatic and pragmatic axes of linguistic analysis, synchronic and diachronic analysis etc. shall also be highlighted. 

FREN 328 French and Francophone Literature

Credit Hours - 2

Course Content

This course will give students a deep overview of French and African Francophone Literature. A selection of texts from the works of some major writers will be analysed. Emphasis will be placed on narrative structure, analytical grid of characters, narrative perspective, setting, temporality, style, and functions of the narrator. Students will also be introduced to exercises such as La dissertation littéraire.

FREN 327 Popular Culture

Credit Hours - 2

Course Content

Afrobeat, polar, web series, and popular culture are not only becoming a part of mainstream culture. It is also attracting academic attention, as evidenced by the development of popular culture studies. This course will introduce students to the world of popular culture in French. They will critically discuss theories related to popular culture. They will also analyse a few representative works. 

FREN 326 Introduction to Professional Translation

Credit Hours - 2

Course Content

This course is designed to allow students to apply translation techniques to semi-specialized texts. They will be introduced to the translation of semi-specialized texts covering health, education, law, business, environment, etc., depending on the instructor’s preferences and in line with course objectives. Various reading and text analysis techniques including Functionalist/Text Analysis (Nord) will also be highlighted. Students will be required to translate various texts chosen by the course instructor. Students will also be introduced to certain key theories of translation.  These include The Interpretive Theory (Seleskovitch and Lederer), Skopos (Vermeer), etc. Where necessary, students may be required to demonstrate their understanding of certain theories through class presentations and commentaries (on their translation procedure(s)). 

FREN 325 Introduction to Non-Specialised Translation

Course Content

This course is an elective and should be chosen by students who desire to study Translation in Year Three and Year Four. Students will learn more translation techniques such as Newmark’s methods of Translation (Word-for-word, Literal; Faithful, Semantic, Adaptation-free, Idiomatic, Communicative), and will learn to translate more complex texts. They will be required to translate non-specialized texts from French into English and from English into French. Texts will be taken from various sources such as current affairs, news articles, opinion editorials, etc, depending on the instructor’s preferences and in line with the course objectives. 

FREN 324 Oral Comprehension And Expression Ii

Credit Hours - 2

Course Content
This course is a continuation of FREN 323. Here, students will learn oral communication techniques to improve their elocution and develop their confidence. Students will learn how to use their knowledge and skills in a variety of situations, including improvised and prepared presentations. Students will evaluate the presentations of other students and integrate information and communication technologies into their work.

FREN 323 Oral Comprehension and Expression I

Credit Hours - 2

Course Content

This course teaching consists in particular of training in oral comprehension, using recorded documents, notably news videos. Expression training takes the form of students' responses to the teacher's questions.

Practiced in language labs or small groups, this course is based on oral communication and interaction. Activities include: orthographic, phonetic, and prosodic transcription, comprehension/expression, and reading practice.

The aim is to remove any remaining inhibitions and to move towards fluent and convincing French, ranging from the sustained register to the more common register as used by the media.

 

FREN 322 Written Expression

Credit Hours - 2

Course Content

In this course, students will acquire written comprehension skills. Written Comprehension is intended to develop students’ ability to interact with written text or academic content and to think critically. It explores comprehension strategies such as prediction, analysis, summary, inferences, and visualization. Students will also be taught to identify the features and structures of texts when reading and work towards transferring their spoken language into written work. 

FREN 321 Grammar

Credit Hours - 3

Course Content

This course is meant to enhance students’ understanding of grammar and morphology. Students will be taught the right usage of words and expressions and their applications in grammatical and textual analysis. The course will also focus on the reasons for common grammatical errors made by students who are non-native speakers/learners of the French language. Errors which are identified will be discussed. Exercises based on such errors will be done in class.
