Professor Merley Newman-Nartey has a first BDS degree from the University of Ghana Medical School and a second degree in Orthodontics from Western University in Canada. She is Ghana’s first consultant Orthodontist and a member of the foundation faculty of six of the University of Ghana Dental School when the clinical program of Dentistry was localized in 1995.

She was the first head of the Department of Orthodontics and Paedodontics of the University of Ghana Dental School from 1995-2014 and the foundation Vice Dean of the University of Ghana School of Medicine and Dentistry from 2014 to 2016. 

She is the President of the Ghana Society of Orthodontists and Assistant Editor of the Ghana Dental Journal and West African Journal of Orthodontists. She has published widely and has 32 publications to her credit. Her main research interests are the orthodontic treatment of patients with special needs ( sickle cell patients and patients with orofacial clefts) and improvement of medical and dental education in West Africa and she is the recipient of the 2006 University of Ghana Best Teacher award for the Sciences. 

She is married to Prof Nii Otu Nartey, the foundation dean of the University of Ghana Dental School and her interests include pianoforte playing, photography, gardening and swimming.
