BACKGROUND
The department of Restorative Dentistry is the largest amongst all the departments in University of Ghana Dental School.
It is a broad branch of dentistry that focuses on restoring comfort and functions (proper chewing, biting and speaking) as well as enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the smile and confidence of the patient.
Restorative dentistry encompasses several dental specialties like conservative dentistry, endodontics, fixed and removable prosthodontics, geriatric restorative dentistry, dental implantology and esthetic dentistry.
The department runs basic courses of all these specialties for the undergraduates and the advanced courses for residents undergoing training for both membership and fellowship of both Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and the West African College of Surgeons. We also render both routine and specialist clinical services to the general public at Korle-bu Teaching Hospital campus.
Conservative dentistry primarily focusses on repairing teeth with cavities or decay (fillings) and chipped/fractured teeth.
Endodontics deals specifically with the treatment of the pulp and root canals to save damaged or infected teeth.
Prosthodontics focusses on replacing missing teeth and restoring oral function with removable prostheses like complete and partial dentures, and fixed prostheses like implants, bridges, crowns, inlays, onlays and veneers.
Geriatric Restorative Dentistry focusses on the specific oral health needs of older adults, including managing age-related dental issues.
Dental implantology involves the placement and restoration of dental implants to replace missing teeth.
Esthetic Dentistry focusses on enhancing the appearance of teeth and smiles through restorative procedures like dental veneers and direct bonding.
Besides teaching, training (undergraduates and residents) and rendering clinical services to the general public, the department also conducts numerous collaborative research and plays a major role in the research week activities organized annually in the school.
