BACKGROUND

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a specialty that focuses on the diagnosis, surgical treatment, and management of diseases and disorders of the face and jaws. The current mandate of this department includes oversight of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. The OMFS discipline encompasses management of facial trauma, congenital and acquired defects and disorders, facial infections, cancers of the jaws, as well as extractions. Oral and Maxillofacial radiology on the other hand involves the use of radiographic imaging to diagnose and treat diseases or disorders of the mouth, teeth, face and jaws.

The department efficiently combines didactic and practical methods to transfer knowledge, making use of the elaborate clinics, theatre and ward spaces of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The department is involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate education, and is actively involved in clinical research.
