DEPARTMENT OF BIOMATERIAL SCIENCE
BACKGROUND
Dental Biomaterial Science is specifically basic science which deals with the study, composition and its modification, fabrication, characterization and evaluation of the properties of dental biomaterials. Biomaterials are essentially used and adapted for medical/dental applications in different specialties of dentistry including restorative materials, endodontic materials, impression materials, orthodontic materials, dental implants and others.
The Department focuses on students’ understanding of the basic properties, composition and structure of these materials used in the oral cavity. The department runs this undergraduate programme through didactic teaching and practical laboratory sessions. In addition, clinical observation of the application of dental materials is emphasized and practicalized for students. The course focuses on research and incorporates new materials and new technologies used in the design and fabrication of new and novel materials. It further helps students in the understanding of new materials with innovative clinical applications.
The department is involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate education, and is actively involved in clinical research.
