MIASA Project: Petroleum Driven Land Grab; Threat to Peasant Livelihood?

Oil exploration began in Ghana in the 19th century and the first onshore oil was discovered in 1896, though actual production for exporting began in 2010. Therefore, the government transferred lands to investors, and this has adversely affected livelihood activities of the smallholders in terms of land size, output, savings, and total development. To curb the adverse effect of land grabs, the Land Act, 2020 (Act 1036) became effective in Ghana on 23rd December 2020. This study will critically look at the level of participatory land administration used for land transfer, the level of peasant livelihoods after the transfer, the relationship between the level of participatory land administration and the participatory land administrative factors that influences level of peasant livelihoods from the peasant farmer’s perspective.
