Message from the Prof. Emmanuel Nyankson

HOD of the Department of name of department

Welcome to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, College of
Engineering, University of Ghana!
Materials scientists and engineers develop the building blocks for technologies addressing some of society’s most challenging issues. The mission of the Department MTEN, University of Ghana is to train students to become part of a diverse workforce of the future, both locally and internationally. Our graduates create solutions to local issues as well as global problems related to advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, transportation, health care, infrastructure and many more.

Everything is possible in Material Science and Engineering
Materials scientists and engineers aim to make everything possible by merging foundational scientific ideas and knowledge with the analytical problem-solving abilities of engineers. They seek to understand the chemistry and physics of materials and engineer solutions to overcome their shortcomings. The field has been active in the advancements since the 21 st -century. Key areas include; high-efficiency solar cells and new battery chemistries for electric cars. One of the important parts of MTEN is the understanding and enhancing manufacturing processes. Advances in materials science have led to the emerging changes in micro-electronic technologies, large-scale additive manufacturing techniques and levitating trains.

Prospects for the Graduate are Just around!
MTEN Department is endowed with faculty expertise spanning from functional, structural materials, computational and experimental materials manufacturing techniques. All undergraduate MTEN students’ progress through an intensive standard Engineering accredited curriculum and traits by Ghana accreditation board. They learn all about the basic materials including ceramics, polymers and metals. This includes their preparations, characterizations and fabrications. The knowledge that students gain in their undergraduate degree program helps them become valued members of the workforce relevant in the country and globally. Our MTEN graduates are “hot-cake” in many local and international industries as well as highly sought across ranges of graduate programs outside the country.

I am looking forward to working together with you, as you start your journey toward becoming a professional materials science and engineering!

Thank you,

Prof. Emmanuel Nyankson
