Graduate Admission

Introduction
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is a foundational member of the School of Engineering Sciences, established in 2004 with a makeup of five departments. With the onset of the collegiate system in August 2014, the Department became part of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences under the School of Engineering Sciences.

Materials Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary field focusing on the relationship between the structure and properties of materials, the factors controlling internal structure, and processes for altering the structure. The field has evolved from metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites to the recent design of nanomaterials.

Justification
Ghana is endowed with diverse natural resources, and Materials Engineers have the capabilities to harness these resources to meet societal needs. For example, silicon from sand can be used for solar energy generation. In specialized medical fields, advancements in materials development have led to the design of composites successfully used for the repair, reconstruction, and replacement of diseased body parts.

The Bachelor of Science degree in MSE has partially met the manpower requirements of the materials industry in Ghana. However, the current knowledge and skills training are inadequate, and advanced education in materials technology is vital. While an MPhil program strengthens expertise in research and technical applications, a PhD program goes beyond to cultivate advanced technical research abilities, offering extensive experience in critical thinking, scientific research, technological development, and innovation.

Aims

  1. To provide students with specialized knowledge in Materials Science and Engineering, focusing on scientific research, technological development, and innovation.
  2. To offer advanced graduate education that prepares students for professional careers as high-level materials scientists and engineers in industry, academia, or the public sector.

Objectives

  1. Identify and strengthen research areas that define the Materials Engineering program of the university.
  2. Foster collaborative research to explore local resources for energy and other materials-related applications.
  3. Equip students with a solid foundation in advanced MSE, enabling them to conduct independent investigations and write technical reports and dissertations.
  4. Train well-educated personnel to engage in research and teaching in public and private universities within and outside the country.
  5. Prepare students for academic and professional careers in Materials Engineering to respond to the growing need for advanced studies and engineering research necessary to meet 21st-century developmental requirements.
