Department welcome Dr. Kwaku Aning is a Ghanaian diplomat, international civil servant and technologist. He was educated at Accra Academy and Mfantsipim school for his O and A levels, respectively. He completed his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1968 from the University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, MS in solid state physics from Princeton University in 1971 and PhD in metallurgical engineering from Columbia University in 1976. Dr. Aning is a former Deputy Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Prior to that appointment he served as Director and Secretary of the Policy Making Organs of the IAEA. He was the Chairman of the governing board of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) from 2017 to 2025. 

He presented a conversation on The application of nuclear technologies for development in one form or another is pervasive and may be found almost in all sectors of human activities, yet the word "nuclear " engenders fear and apprehension in people. This is particularly important for Ghanaians at this time since the country is getting ready to introduce nuclear power as part of her energy mix. In addition, the talk will cover the technology applications in agriculture, food security, nutrition, health, environmental water management, antiquities and industry. It will then address the prerequisites like nuclear safety, security and safeguards which underpin the safe use of the technology. The presentation will be followed by discussions, questions and answers.
