First Cohort of Students Begins Training at Toyota Tsusho Academy
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is proud to announce the participation of its first cohort of students in the newly introduced Toyota Tsusho Manufacturing Ghana (TTMG) Training Program. This initiative marks an important step in bridging academic knowledge with industrial practice, while exposing students to world-class automotive manufacturing systems and standards.
The training program is designed to equip students with practical knowledge in car design, vehicle assembly processes, maintenance systems, and quality control practices based on the renowned Toyota Production System (TPS). Through this partnership, students are gaining firsthand experience in the principles that have made Toyota a global leader in automobile manufacturing.
The program began with an introduction to the global and Ghanaian automotive industry, followed by sessions on safety practices and Toyota’s quality concepts. Students were also introduced to the fundamentals of the Toyota Production System, including Kaizen thinking, standardized work procedures, and continuous improvement strategies used in modern manufacturing industries.
As part of the technical training, participants explored various vehicle systems such as brake systems, sensors, HVAC systems, transmission systems, and materials selection for automotive parts. The program also includes practical sessions and plant tours, allowing students to observe real vehicle assembly processes and understand the application of TPS in industry settings.
In addition, students are receiving hands-on training in maintenance operations, engine management, fault diagnosis, emission control systems, and simulator-based practical exercises. These activities are aimed at developing both technical competence and problem-solving skills required in the automotive sector.
The training will conclude with a knowledge assessment, career interaction sessions with industry trainers, discussions on job opportunities, and the presentation of certificates to participants.
In a nutshell, This new initiative reflects the department’s commitment to producing industry-ready graduates with practical experience and a strong understanding of modern manufacturing and quality assurance systems. The Toyota Tsusho Academy Program is expected to create valuable opportunities for students while strengthening collaboration between academia and industry.
