You are welcome to the Department of Chemistry. The Department of Chemistry is a reputable world-class teaching and research unit within the University of Ghana. From the very inception of the University in 1948, the Department of Chemistry has stood as a cornerstone of scientific education and research, evolving in tandem with the institution’s journey toward excellence. We have an exceptional record in Natural Products Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry. We provide a highly interdisciplinary education across all the branches of Inorganic, Materials, Organic, Medicinal, Computational, Physical, Environmental, and Analytical Chemistry. Our programs and curriculum are intentionally engineered to allow our students to receive training that makes them thorough problem-solvers, analytical and critical thinkers, and effective oral and written communicators. Our faculty interactions with students create the right environment that supports useful time management and teamwork for the growth and professional development of our students and faculty members.
Brief History
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Ghana was established in 1948 at the very inception of the University, making it one of the pioneering academic units that has grown in stature and impact alongside the institution itself. Its first Ghanaian Head of Department was Professor Frank Torto, whose leadership laid the foundation for excellence in teaching and research. Over the years, the department has distinguished itself not only in the sciences but also in university leadership, having produced two Vice-Chancellors of the University of Ghana, Emeritus Professor Ivan Addae-Mensah and Professor J. B. Quartey. Beyond chemistry, its influence extended into technology and innovation, with Professor Dakubu, a member of the department, spearheading the establishment of the University of Ghana Computing Systems (UGCS). Today, the department continues to be a cornerstone of scientific advancement, renowned for its contributions in natural products, medicinal chemistry, materials science, and computational chemistry, while nurturing generations of scholars who drive national development and global progress.

Professor Collins Obuah was appointed as the Head of Department on August 1st 2026. He has been with the department since 2016 and is a leading researcher in inorganic chemistry and computational chemistry.
