University Governance
- Legal Status:
- The University of Ghana was established by the University of Ghana Act, 1961 (Act 79) to replace the then University College of Ghana. The Act was amended in 2010 by the University of Ghana Act, 2010 (Act 806).
- The University is a body corporate with a legal personality and can sue and be sued in its own name.
- It is a public tertiary institution and currently receives funding from the Government of Ghana
- The University is a tax-exempt institution per the Internal Revenue Act, 2000 (Act 592) and also exempted from paying property rates imposed by the local government.
- Governance:
- The University of Ghana is governed by the University Council consisting of eighteen (18) members. The duties of the Council include but are not limited to determining the strategic direction of the University, promoting means of generating income for the university and appointing professors to the University.
- The Vice Chancellor is the academic and administrative head and Chief Disciplinary Officer of the University.
- The Registrar is the Chief Operating Officer responsible for the day to day administration of the affairs of the University.
