Rev. Fr. Prof. Michael Perry Kweku Okyerefo, a former Dean of the School of Arts and former Head of the Department of Sociology, recently concluded the final inaugural lecture of the 2023/2024 academic year. The lecture focused on the theme, "The Autobiographical Self as an Object for Sociological Enquiry."

The Lecturer examined the intriguing connection between Sociology and selfhood using the biographical research approach. Rev. Fr. Prof. Michael Okyerefo demonstrated the influence of societal structures on individual lives by highlighting the interconnectivity of his own life and its connection to the lives of others. He emphasized the impact of social forces and the decisions individuals make, both willingly and unwillingly, on shaping their biographies.

Rev. Fr. Prof. Michael Okyerefo emphasized the need of recognizing that social interaction is influenced by both individuals' personal experiences and societal institutions. He urged African universities to promote an African emancipatory imagination in order to have a positive influence on people's life stories and narratives. He believes that African universities and institutions play a crucial role in generating knowledge. "The speaker argued that knowledge is not limited by any boundaries, and therefore it is necessary to remove the cultural, political, and social barriers that currently exist in order to prevent a Western dominance over knowledge systems," he stated.
