The Department of Music at the School of Performing Arts (SPA), University of Ghana recently held a send-off party in honor of Professor Austin Oghenemaro Emielu, who completed his seven years tenure as a visiting scholar in the department. The event, attended by Prof Emielu's family, students, and colleagues, glowing paid tribute to his significant contributions to the department and highlighted his extensive works.
Speaking at the event, the Head of Department, Dr. Benjamin Amakye-Boateng expressed his appreciation to Prof. Emielu's enormous contribution to the department beyond academics. “We are going to miss your insightful contributions during our colloquiums and meetings, and we wish you well in your future endeavors,” he stated. The administrator of SPA, Miss. Araba Nketseaba Nunoo, also spoke of his tremendous work ethics and how Prof Emielu remains one of the most reliable faculty members of the school. “Prof will still remain one of the most reliable faculty member of the school because he was always ready to serve even when the notice came late,” she said. The other heads of Departments in the school, Dr. Samuel Benargr and Dr. Terry Bright Fosu, also paid glowing tribute to Prof Emielu’s selflessness and dedication to their departments.
Faculty and students of the school, especially the department all spoke to his influence on their professional and academic careers. Prof Joshua Amuah and Dr Adwoa Arhine, the immediate past HoD, all spoke highly of his commitment and diligence to work as well as his friendliness. Dr Eric Sunu Doe pointed out how he would miss his concerts and performances. Dr Stephen Aidoo described Prof Emielu as his academic father and was grateful for his guidance throughout his doctoral studies.
In response, Prof Emielu expressed his deep appreciation for the support and experiences he had received from the university in his time with us. “This is not goodbye; I will always cherish the memories and connections we have made. I wish you all good luck in all your endeavors and Ghana will always be my second home,” he noted.
The ceremony concluded with presentations including a citation honoring his contributions and thoughtful gifts—symbols of the Music Department's appreciation for his impactful tenure.
