The Department of Music at the University of Ghana kicked off this semester’s Unplugged Sessions series with an evening of live burger highlife music dubbed “Fire Connection” on Thursday, 19th June 2025, in the department’s courtyard. The event spotlighted two talented first-year students from the Pop Ensemble, Winsid Pascal and Vivian Asiedu, whose performances brought fresh energy to classic sounds.
True to its name, Fire Connection ignited nostalgic memories with stripped-down renditions of iconic burger highlife hits from the 1980s. The session opened with Vivian Asiedu, whose soulful interpretations of Kojo Antwi’s “Bome Nkomode” and Amakye Dede’s “Odo Ho Akyere No” set a compelling tone for the night. Her expressive vocals and emotional depth resonated effectively with the audience who sang along.
Building on this energy, Winsid Pascal took the spotlight with performances of Amakye Dede’s “Broken Promise” and George Darko’s “Kaakyire Nua.” His delivery and stage presence quickly drew the audience to their feet. The evening reached its peak with a collaborative rendition of Kojo Antwi’s “Hini Me,” which left the crowd visibly moved and appreciative.
The event created a laid-back, intimate atmosphere where voices, keyboards, and unfiltered emotion came together to breathe new life into the melodies that was performed. Unplugged Sessions aims to offer students and the broader community a space to experience music as it was meant to be live, raw, and deeply connected.
