Seminar: Mass, count, and in-between: Insights from Asante Twi
Abstract: Asante Twi has three categories of nouns with respect to the mass-count distinction: Mass, count, and intermediate. Intermediate nouns have retained their count denotations while developing syntactically alongside mass nouns, permitting them to be felicitous in some typically count and some typically mass contexts. This research explores the intricacies of the intermediate nouns and their development with respect to the syntax-semantic interface, as well how Asante Twi fits into the mass-count typology of the world's languages.
