Brief History

The Department of Linguistics at our esteemed institution traces its roots back to 1963, making it one of the oldest linguistic departments among African universities. Over the years, our unwavering commitment to excellence has shaped our journey. The Department of Linguistics emerged as a pioneering force in linguistic studies. Our vision was clear: to explore the intricate world of language and contribute significantly to academic discourse. Currentl, we offer Bachelor’s degrees in  General/Theoretical Linguistics and a masters and PhD in Teaching English as a Second Language and in General/Theoretical Linguistics.

We aspire to be a leading linguistics department in Africa and globally. Our commitment lies in nurturing world-class graduates and scholars who excel in both theoretical and applied aspects of language studies, teaching, and research.

Mission

Advance Linguistic Knowledge: We engage in rigorous research across diverse linguistic domains, including language teaching, language and business, language and society, language policy, language and the deaf, language and culture, language and law, and language and politics. Through our scholarly endeavors, we contribute to the global understanding of language.
  2. Empower Language Appreciation: We instill in our students a deep appreciation for language—both as a universal phenomenon and as a vital component of Ghanaian culture. By exploring the intricacies of language, our graduates gain insights into societal development.
