ADMISSION INTO THE MASTER OF ARTS (M.A) PROGRAMME IN CONFERENCE INTERPRETING

2024/2025 ACADEMIC YEAR

 

I. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • A good first degree, at least Second Class Lower (in any subject) or its equivalent.
  • Proficiency in all working languages, and in the A language in particular.
  • In addition, applicants will take an aptitude test, and will be interviewed.

Nature of Programme and Duration

The Master of Arts Programme in Conference Interpreting is a two-year programme spanning four semesters.

 

II. LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS                        

In addition to the above Entry Requirements, candidates should take note of the following Language Requirements:

 

The active languages offered on the programme are English and French. Candidates may present other working languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic). The applicant shall have:

 

EITHER

Language Combination Option I

a. one language A – (English or French) This is the first active language - Language of Highest Competence & Intuition into which candidates shall interpret from the language(s) B (and/or C) and

 

b. one language B – English or French. This is the Second active language - Language of High Competence into which they shall interpret from the language A. Applicants should have spent at least one year in a country in which language B is widely spoken;

 

OR

Language Combination option II

c. one language A (Active language - Language of Highest Competence & Intuition) into which they shall interpret from the languages C and

 

d. two languages C – Spanish, Portuguese, German, Etc. (Passive Languages – Languages of good level of proficiency) from which they shall interpret into the language A.

 

Evaluation of Applications:

Candidates who meet the above requirements may submit, in addition to the filled Application Form:

• A detailed CV;                               

• An application letter stating reasons for applying for the programme and indicating their languages

   A, B and/or C.

  • Transcripts for full duration of programme and certificate of undergraduate study [minimum Bachelor's degree] (translated into English if original language is not English)
  • 3 Recommendation letters (Referee reports) translated into English if original language is not English

 

Applications that are lacking one of these will be rejected.

 

For candidates with combination A and B, preference will be given to applicants who meet two of the following criteria:

 

• have spent a considerable period of time in a country of their language B (several years)

• have daily contact with their language B (bilingual family, constant use at workplace)

• have a degree in their language B

 

This will be taken into consideration in assessing the acceptability of the application submitted.

 

III. COMPETITIVE ENTRANCE EXAMINATION & INTERVIEW    

Dates for the Competitive Entrance Examination & Interview will be provided once scheduled. This will either be held virtually or in person. Candidates will be informed by email.

Candidates will:

(a) Make an oral presentation in their active languages;

(b) be interviewed on their general background and general knowledge based on questions drawn up by the selection committee;

(c) undergo a simple interpreting without note-taking test using a beginner-level speech of not more than 3 minutes

 

IV. HOW TO APPLY

 

1. GHANAIAN APPLICANTS

GHANAIAN APPLICANTS

University of Ghana application e-voucher can be obtained by Ghanaian applicants for GH¢ 200.00 via USSD Payment or at the following banks: Access BankZenith Bank, Universal Merchant Bank, Ecobank, Republic Bank, Agricultural Development Bank, GCB Bank, Unibank, Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG), Prudential Bank, First Atlantic Bank and Fidelity Bank. Applicants should follow carefully the instructions on the voucher when completing the ONLINE APPLICATION FORM.

Applicants who did not graduate from the University of Ghana must submit the following documents online (Scan and Attach):

  • Bachelors’ Degree Certificate and Transcript of all undergraduate years of study
  • Three referees’ reports are required (provide the details of the referees online)
  • PhD applicants should attach their Research Proposals to the application (Not more than Four pages)
  • Scan and upload a Gazette/Marriage certificate where name has changed

The official transcript should be scanned into one PDF or WORD document and attached to the application along with their translations if the originals are not in English.

NOTE THAT NO APPLICATION WILL BE PROCESSED WITHOUT THE SCANNED CERTIFICATE/OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT OR GAZETTE/MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE WHERE NAME HAS CHANGED. The originals will be required during interviews.

All applicants who graduated from the University of Ghana from 1996 to date should indicate their ‘STUDENT IDENTITY NUMBERS’ on their forms before submission.

 

N.B. Kindly write your serial number as it appears on the e-voucher on all the above documents before submitting them. The name of the programme being applied for and your telephone number should also be written on all the documents.

 

2. INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS AND GHANAIANS APPLYING FROM ABROAD

 

This category of applicants should use the following links to access the online application form for completion and submission:

All applicants are expected to pay to the University a non-refundable application processing fee of US$110.00. This fee can be paid directly or wire transferred into the UNIVERSITY OF GHANA ECOBANK ACCOUNT.

The pay-in-slips together with applicants’ certificates and transcripts should be scanned and attached to the application form before submission. The transcript should be scanned into one PDF or WORD document and attached to the application.

TUITION FEES

Tuition fees are published on a yearly basis after approval from the Parliament of Ghana. You can however consult the Provisional Fees for an indication of the fees. Fees vary based on your status (Ghanaian/International student). All fees quoted in cedis are for Ghanaian students only. Fees quoted in dollars are for all international students. This programme is classified as a two-year M.A. programme. Please note that all fees quoted may be subject to change.
