FACULTY CHANGES IN THE DEPARTMENT OF FRENCH

Dr Samuel Koffi is the new Head of the Department of French starting August 1, 2022. The senior lecturer takes over from Dr Sewoenam Chachu who served as Head from August 1 2019 – July 31, 2022.  

On July 29, 2022 the Department of French honored Dr Chachu for her distinguished service to the department in a small ceremony which had Dr Sarah Marjie representing the Head of Department of Modern Languages and the Dean of the School of Languages Prof Helen Yitah in attendance. The new Head of Department Dr Koffi presented a citation to Dr Chachu and described her tenure as one filled with strong leadership, initiative and fairness. Prof Yitah, in a short address, also lauded the work of Dr Chachu and wished her well in her future endeavors. She also congratulated Dr Koffi on his new role and expressed her readiness to continue to support his office and the Department of French.  

Dr Mawushi Nutakor was also acknowledged during the ceremony for his service to the Department of French prior to his retirement on July 29 2022. Dr Nutakor however continues to serve in a part-time capacity.  

Ms Marjolaine Escande-Wadike and Ms Jibola Osofolahan, both lecturers of the M.A. Conference Interpreting programme have also gone on to retire. The two conference interpreters and interpreter trainers have trained several conference interpreters who have gone on to be interpreter trainers, freelance interpreters, staff interpreters and chief interpreters. The Department will forever be in a debt of gratitude to them for their selfless service.  

Despite these changes to the faculty, the new Head of Department is optimistic that with continued collaboration, hardwork and innovation, the Department will continue to see progress and maintain its reputation as a leader in French and francophone studies.
