The Department of Plant and Environmental Biology at the University of Ghana has organized a two-week intensive training programme in herbarium management techniques from the 28th of November 2021 to 10th of December 2021. The interns are staff of the Forestry Training Institute of Liberia, and a Level 300 BSc Biology student from the University of Ghana. The interns from Liberia were funded by the USDA Forest Service, International Programs.

The programme was co-ordinated by Head of Department, Prof. Alex Asase, and facilitated by Mr. Anthony Adu-Gyamfi of the Ghana Herbarium. The interns were taken through topics such as integrated pest management, collections, pressing, and drying of plants, mounting of herbarium specimens, and digitization of herbarium specimens.

In his concluding remarks, Prof. Asase, indicated that he is hopeful that the interns have acquired adequate skills to enable them to start and manage their institute’s herbarium. The interns on their part were full of praise and promise to make good use of the techniques they have acquired during the period of their internship.
