About
Dr Aurelia Ayisi is a Lecturer in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Ghana. Her teaching and research are situated at the intersection of digital communication, media and information literacy (MIL), AI Literacy, gender and media, and the creative industries. She holds a PhD in Cultural Studies from Bath Spa University, an MA in Media and Cultural Analysis from Loughborough University, and a BA in Sociology from the University of Ghana.
Her research examines how digital platforms are transforming media practices, civic engagement, and gender representation, with a particular focus on the Global South. Dr Ayisi has led and collaborated on numerous interdisciplinary projects funded by international organisations, including MFWA, CFLI, UNESCO, Freedom House, and the Wellcome Trust, among others.
Her recent work includes studies on AI-generated news and public trust in Ghana, the role of MIL in combating disinformation, and how campus media fosters journalism training and professional skills development.
A committed advocate for inclusive and ethical media, she has designed and facilitated training on gender-sensitive reporting, fact-checking, and digital literacy for journalists, influencers, and educators. She also consults on gender policy development in the media sector.
She is a member of several international bodies, including the International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE), the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR), and the African Alliance for Access to Data.
