Message from Dr. Aurelia Ayisi

HoD of the Department of Communication Studies

Welcome!

On behalf of our faculty, staff, and students, I warmly welcome you to the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Ghana.

In today’s rapidly evolving, hyper-connected world, our department leads the charge in the study of communication, bridging cutting-edge research with professional mastery across media, strategic communication, digital technologies, artificial intelligence, governance, and social development, to address the defining opportunities and challenges of our time.

Established in 1972 as the Institute of Journalism and Mass Communication, our Department has built a proud, five-decade legacy of academic leadership and scholarly influence. Today, as part of the School of Information and Communication Studies, we continue to evolve alongside the global media ecosystem while maintaining an unwavering commitment to intellectual rigour and professional relevance. We offer graduate degree programs: Master of Arts (MA) in Communication Studies, Master of Arts (MA) in Strategic Communication (Regular and Evening options), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Communication Studies and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Communication Studies

Our pedagogical approach bridges deep theoretical foundations with real-world practice. We cultivate an inclusive, intellectually stimulating environment where students engage deeply with contemporary issues through rigorous coursework, empirical research, industry engagement, and collaborative mentorship. Our objective is to nurture ethical leaders, critical thinkers, and forward-looking professionals capable of driving innovation across Ghana, Africa, and the globe.

In over five decades, the Department has trained over1,000 graduates who lead and transform sectors spanning media management, social development, advertising, public relations, communication and media policy and regulation, and academia. Our alumni network includes prominent national and international figures, notably H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana.

As Head of Department, my vision is to build boldly upon this foundation. We are actively expanding our research agenda to address emerging and complex realities, including the impact of digital technologies such as AI. We are also deepening our strategic collaborations with local and global industry and academic partners.

Whether you are a prospective student seeking to advance your career, an alumnus returning to your academic roots, or a global research collaborator, I invite you to explore our website and discover what makes our community unique. But don’t end it here. Connect with us and let’s make an impact together. Welcome!
