The Master of Philosophy in Communication Studies programme is aimed at preparing the next generation of communication researchers, scholars and instructors. The two-year programme combines the strengths of different fields in communication industries such as journalism, advertising, public relations and development communication to provide a theoretical and professional foundation for further studies in communication, and careers in industry. Students take a first year of course work [same content as the MA programmes] followed by a second year of independent and original research. The programme is offered in two pathways: 2-year MPhil, and One year top-up MPhil.
Programme Objectives
The objectives of the programme are to:
- to deepen students’ skills for conceptualizing, designing and executing rigorous scientific research
- to prepare students for further study in communication disciplines
- to contribute to and expand knowledge on communication in Ghana and Africa
- to develop professionals with expertise in communication research to provide support to Ghana’s communication and media industries
Admission Requirements
Two-year MPhil
Applicants must have a good first degree, at a minimum of second class lower, in a related field of study (e.g. Media Studies, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing or cognate fields in the humanities and social sciences) from an accredited university. Applicants with third class may be considered for admission based on work experience and other qualifications. Applicants will be required to undergo all admission processes before selection.
One-year top up:
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (MA or MSc) or equivalent with a GPA of at least 3.5 (B+) in the same field of study. The degree must have been obtained within a period no more than five years. Applicants will be adjudged capable by an admissions committee after undergoing all admission processes.
Programme Duration: One/two years [depending on the pathway]
Programme Pathways
Two-year MPhil
Students come in with a Bachelor's degree and complete one year of MA course work. On the basis of their performance, the Department may recommend to the Board of Graduate Studies that they be upgraded to the MPhil programme. Such students must obtain an average of B+ (or GPA of 3.5) to be eligible for the upgrade. In addition, consideration is given to performance in key courses (e.g. Communication Research Methods and Communication Theories) as well as their general aptitude for independent research.
Top up MPhil
This option is open to students who already hold a Masters degree in communication studies. Using their MA to satisfy the course work requirements, students undertake minimal course work and conduct independent research culminating into a thesis.
