Overview

The Theatre Arts Department welcomes students with a passion for performance, storytelling, and creative expression. Our undergraduate program offers a rich blend of theory and practice in acting, directing, playwriting, stage design, and more.

Applicants must meet the University of Ghana’s general admission requirements. In some cases, an interview or audition may be required to assess a candidate’s interest and aptitude for theatre. We seek individuals who are eager to explore the power of theatre in shaping culture, society, and creative industries.


Aims & Objectives

The undergraduate programme in Theatre Arts is designed to:

  • Provide students with a strong foundation in the theory and practice of theatre.
  • Develop creative, analytical, and performance skills across diverse areas such as acting, directing, playwriting, and design.
  • Promote an understanding and appreciation of Ghanaian, African, and global theatrical traditions.
  • Prepare students for professional careers in the performing arts, media, education, and cultural sectors.
  • Encourage critical thinking, artistic innovation, and the use of theatre as a tool for social transformation.


Career Prospects

Graduates of the Theatre Arts Department are equipped for diverse and rewarding careers in the creative and cultural industries. They may work as actors, directors, playwrights, stage managers, set designers, and producers in theatre, film, and television.

Other career paths include arts education, cultural policy, media and communication, event management, and community arts. The programme also prepares students for further studies and research in the performing arts, both locally and internationally


Tuition Method

The Theatre Arts Department uses a practical, student-centered approach to teaching, blending classroom learning with hands-on experience. Teaching methods include:

  • Lectures and Seminars for theoretical grounding in theatre history, criticism, and dramatic literature.
  • Studio and Workshop Sessions focused on acting, directing, design, and production.
  • Performances and Projects that give students real-world experience in staging and managing theatrical works.
  • Field Trips and Guest Lectures to expose students to industry practices and professional insights.

This combination of academic and practical training ensures that students develop both intellectual depth and creative skill


Entry Requirements

Applicants to the Theatre Arts Department must meet the general admission requirements of the University of Ghana. In addition, candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in the performing arts.

Some applicants may be invited for an interview or audition to assess their creative potential and commitment to theatre. A background in literature, performing arts, or related fields is an advantage but not mandatory. The department welcomes passionate individuals eager to explore and contribute to the world of theatre.
