The Theatre Arts Department offers a dynamic and interdisciplinary approach to the study and practice of theatre. Our programs combine rigorous academic training with hands-on experience in acting, directing, playwriting, design, and production.

Rooted in both Ghanaian performance traditions and global theatrical practices, the department provides students with the skills and knowledge to excel in the creative arts, education, cultural leadership, and the performing arts industry.

Brief History

The Department of Theatre Arts was established in 1962 as a key component of the School of Performing Arts at the University of Ghana, Legon. Originally part of the Institute of African Studies, the department emerged in response to a growing need to study and develop theatre as both an academic discipline and a tool for cultural expression and national development.

Founded by pioneers such as Efua Sutherland and Joe de Graft, the department was instrumental in shaping modern Ghanaian theatre, blending indigenous performance traditions with contemporary forms and techniques. It became a space for the exploration of storytelling, ritual, and performance as vital aspects of African identity and communication.

Over the decades, the department has expanded its curriculum to include acting, directing, playwriting, stage design, technical theatre, theatre for development, and critical theatre studies. It has produced countless graduates who have become influential actors, playwrights, directors, educators, and cultural leaders in Ghana and beyond.

With strong ties to local and international theatre communities, the department continues to serve as a centre for excellence in theatre education, research, and creative practice, committed to preserving African performance traditions while embracing innovation and global perspectives.
