The Graduate programmes in the Theatre Arts Department are designed for individuals seeking advanced academic, professional, and creative development in theatre and performance studies. Offering MPhil, MA, and PhD degrees, the programmes provide a strong foundation in research, theory, and practice.

Aims & Objectives

The Graduate programmes in the Theatre Arts Department aim to deepen students’ understanding of theatre as a scholarly, creative, and socially engaged discipline. Our key objectives are to:

  • Foster original research and creative work that contribute to the development of African and global theatre practices.

Tutition Method

The Theatre Arts Department employs a flexible and research-oriented tuition method at the graduate level, combining academic rigor with creative practice. Students engage in:

  • Seminars and Lectures – Focused on advanced theories, methodologies, and critical discourses in theatre and performance.
  • Creative Practice – Including directing, playwriting, and performance projects as part of applied coursework.
  • Independent Research – Culminating in a thesis or dissertation that contributes original knowledge to the field.

Entry Requirement

Applicants to the graduate programmes in the Theatre Arts Department must hold a good first degree (at least Second Class Lower) in Theatre Arts or a related field from a recognized university.

In addition to meeting the University of Ghana’s general graduate admission requirements, applicants may be required to attend an interview or submit a research proposal or portfolio, depending on the specific programme. A strong interest in theatre research, practice, or education is essential. The department welcomes candidates who are committed to advancing knowledge and innovation in the performing arts.
