About the Department
The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science originated as part of the Department of Mathematics, where it remained from 1960 to 1980. In 1980, funding was secured to construct the Statistics Block, allowing the Department of Statistics to relocate to its newly completed building adjacent to the Mathematics Block. Professor Samuel Inkoom Kwasi Odoom, affectionately known as SIKO, became the first Head of the Department. He also served as the Head of the Department of Computer Science. It was during this time that the department began offering independent courses in statistics.
The Actuarial Science program was launched in 2014, marking a pivotal milestone in the department's growth and expansion. In 2015, the department was renamed from the Department of Statistics to the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science to reflect its enhanced academic offerings and broader focus.
At present, the department is staffed by 21 full-time lecturers, 2 part-time lecturers, and 5 non-teaching staff members. Its academic team includes 2 full professors, 4 associate professors, 9 senior lecturers, and 6 lecturers, underscoring its strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research.
The department offers a range of academic programs, from undergraduate to postgraduate levels, and consistently reviews its curriculum to align with the evolving needs of Ghana, Africa, and the global community.
