The Department of Adult Health Nursing is one of the constituent departments of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Ghana, Legon. The Department of Adult Health Nursing was carved out of the School of Nursing in 2003 when the then Department of Nursing became a School within the College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana. The Department of Adult Health is principally oriented towards Adult Nursing. It has a strong focus on Medical-Surgical Nursing with its practical components, which form the foundation of all nursing programme, where prominence is placed on training polyvalent nursing professionals in the area of medical-surgical nursing.
The department provides varied prospects for student and faculty engagement. In addition, we collaborate with researchers, clinicians, preceptors, and other institutions both locally and internationally to ensure quality research, teaching, and learning. The department further facilitates the licensing and registration of undergraduate student nurses as registered general nurses with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana.
Faculty of the Department of Adult Health Nursing collaborates with other departments of the School of Nursing and Midwifery to run the BSc Nursing/Midwifery programme. The Department of Adult Health Nursing also trains PhD, MPhil, and MSc students who conduct credible research relevant to Adult Nursing and related disciplines. The courses handled by the faculty members of the department are embedded in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programme and are taught at different levels.
The department has nine (9) very dedicated faculty members whose research activities hover around hypertension, diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome, palliative care, cancers, sickle cell disease, peri-operative care, burnout syndrome, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, cultural diversity and sensitivity in nursing care, aged care, kidney diseases and conditions associated with special senses to mention a few. The faculty members of the department are accordingly engaged in both individual and collaborative research, which has culminated in several prestigious publications over the years.
