Professor Austin Emielu joined the Department of Music as a Visiting Scholar in 2018. Previously, he worked at the University of Ilorin and Kwara State University in Nigeria. His research interest is in African and African Diaspora popular music, popular culture, and music and society. Currently, Austin teaches undergraduate and graduate courses, including research methodology, graduate seminars, musicology, African Diaspora musical traditions, and community music in Africa. He is the Graduate Coordinator and Director of the African Diaspora Ensemble. He is the author of Nigerian Highlife Music and several articles published in reputable outlets. Austin is a Fellow of the African Humanities Programme of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), a 2019 Presidential Fellow of the African Studies Association (ASA), a Visiting Professor at the International Library of African Music, Rhodes University, South Africa, member and immediate past Liaison Officer (Nigeria), International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM) and member, Society for Ethnomusicology.
