The Department of Linguistics at the University of Ghana, Legon, is one of the University’s vibrant academic units dedicated to the scientific study of language, with a special focus on Ghanaian and other African languages. Since its establishment in 1964, the department has demonstrated excellence in teaching and research on topics such as sound systems, word formation, sentence structure, meaning, sociolinguistics, language acquisition, and the interface between language, culture and society. Our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (BA, MA, MPhil and PhD) equip students with analytical and applied skills that are relevant to careers in education, media and communication, translation and interpreting, language documentation, language technology and policy. With active research groups and collaborations, including projects on language documentation and biodiversity, the department provides an intellectually stimulating environment for students and scholars interested in the rich linguistic diversity of Ghana and Africa.
