The LEGON-UP Winter School on Formal Semantics and Experimental Fieldwork Research is a new high-level training initiative jointly organized by Prof. R. Akuoko Duah (Department of Linguistics, University of Ghana) and Prof. Dr. Malte Zimmermann (University of Potsdam, Germany). Funded through Prof. Zimmermann’s research grants and supported by invited faculty from leading European and American universities, the programme creates a unique international platform for advanced training in semantics and experimental methods in West Africa.
About the Winter School
The Winter School will be held at the University of Ghana, Legon, from 26 January to 6 February 2026, bringing together local and international faculty for two intensive weeks of lectures, seminars, and hands-on workshops. Sessions will cover core areas such as statistics for linguistic research, research ethics, experimental and fieldwork methodology, and formal semantic theory, with a strong emphasis on linking empirical field data to cutting-edge theoretical analysis.
Participants and Target Group
The programme is designed primarily for MPhil and PhD students in the Department of Linguistics, University of Ghana, and will also host graduate students from the University of Potsdam, fostering North–South collaboration and long-term research networks. Through close interaction with invited faculty, participants will deepen their expertise in formal semantics and experimental fieldwork, develop new project ideas, and strengthen their capacity to contribute to global debates on the semantics and pragmatics of African and other understudied languages
