PEBO 433 Environmental microbiology

The main objective of this course is to introduce students to the scope of environmental microbiology and role of microorganisms in the environment e.g. bio-geochemical cycling of major elements. The course is expected to nurture students the importance of interactions between microbial populations; chemical warfare in microbial interaction in the environment. The students would also be taught the uses of microbes as bioremediation agents in petroleum and the mining industry. The course will also assist students to understand the activity of luminescent bacteria and the role of bacteria and fungi in bio-deterioration; decomposition and functioning of ecosystems.
