The UG Distance Education Junior Common Room officially kicked off the 2024/2025 academic year in style with its highly anticipated Freshers AKWAABA Festival and AKWAABA Night, a full-day celebration dedicated to warmly welcoming newly admitted students into the university community.
Organized by the Events and Welfare Committee of the JCR, the day was packed with engaging, interactive, and memorable activities designed to foster a sense of belonging and connection among freshers. The festival began with an energizing Health Walk and Aerobics session, where students, committee members, and staff came together in a show of unity, fitness, and fun. This was followed by a comprehensive health screening that included free eye tests, blood pressure checks, and other essential medical services, ensuring students had access to basic wellness support as they embark on their academic journey.

The highlight of the day came in the evening with the Mega AKWAABA Night, a lively celebration featuring a talent exhibition, musical and artistic performances, and moments of vibrant student interaction. The night served not just as entertainment, but as a platform for students to express themselves and connect beyond the classroom.
Adding to the significance of the day was the presence of the Head of the Department, Prof. Samuel Amponsah, Head of Students Support Unit, Dr Jonathan Odame, Head of Materials Unit Mr Ebenezer Odame, Assistant Registrar-Accra Learning Centre, Mrs. Grace Mary Annang and the Chief Organizer-Accra Learning Centre, Mrs Sylvia Asamoa, whose attendance underscored the department’s unwavering commitment to student welfare, inclusion, and community building. Their participation was a powerful source of motivation for both freshers and the entire organizing team.
