Message from the Prof. Simon-Peter Kafui Aheto, HOD

Department of Distance Education

Welcome to the Department of Distance Education, University of Ghana. It is a privilege to lead a Department that has, for decades, contributed to expanding access to quality higher education through flexible and innovative learning. As we enter our next phase, our goal is to build on this legacy and position the Department for greater national, African and global impact.

My vision is “to provide strategic leadership to position the Department of Distance Education as a leading African centre of excellence in innovative, technology-driven education, research and global engagement.”

At the heart of this vision are our people. We will invest in faculty and staff development, welfare, research capacity and leadership, while nurturing a culture of collegiality, integrity, inclusion, respect and excellence. We will equally champion an accessible, flexible, technology-enabled and student-centred learning experience. This reflects the University of Ghana's strategic commitment to transformative student experience and sustained investment in faculty and staff.

Innovation and digital transformation will be central to our work. We will strengthen technology-enabled teaching and learning, promote innovative pedagogies and encourage the responsible and human-centred use of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence. This directly supports the Vice-Chancellor's strategic objective of building technology-driven systems across teaching, learning, research and administration.

We will strengthen our research and knowledge-generation culture, encouraging faculty and students to undertake collaborative research, publications, grants, conferences and interdisciplinary projects in distance, online, blended and technology-mediated education. Our ambition is for the Department's scholarship to influence policy and practice in Ghana, Africa and beyond.

Internationalisation and strategic partnerships will also be a major priority. We will build relationships with universities, industry and international organisations, including AAU, UNESCO, the Commonwealth of Learning, the African Council for Distance Education (ACDE) and the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE). These engagements will support research, capacity development, knowledge exchange, and international visibility, consistent with the University's internationalisation agenda.

Within the University, we will deepen collaboration with the School of Continuing and Distance Education, University of Ghana Learning Centres, the Digital Youth Village and Centre for Digital Youth Development, academic departments whose programmes we support, and other relevant units to strengthen an integrated distance education ecosystem.

Our students will remain central to our agenda. We intend to institute a Distance Education Students Conference to provide opportunities for research presentation, intellectual exchange, and engagement with scholars, professionals, and industry. We will also strengthen industry partnerships to create opportunities for mentorship, professional development, internships, entrepreneurship, and employment.

The Department's approaching 20th anniversary provides an important opportunity to celebrate our history, recognize those who have contributed to our development, strengthen alumni and stakeholder networks, document our achievements, and launch a renewed agenda for the future.

Ultimately, our ambition is to make the Department more visible, innovative, research-active, internationally connected, and responsive to the people we serve. Through consultation, collaboration, and accountable leadership, we will strengthen our foundations, expand our reach, and position the Department of Distance Education as a recognized African leader in the future of education.

I invite our faculty, staff, students, alumni, partners, industry, and international collaborators to join us in making this vision a reality.
