You are welcome to the Department of Dance Studies 

The Department of Dance Studies is one of the three (3) Departments in the School of Performing Arts, under the College of Humanities responsible for research as well as teaching and learning of dance forms in Ghana and other parts of the world. Our work in the Department is in conformity with the Vision, Mission and Core Values of the University of Ghana as enshrined in the University of Ghana Strategic Plan (2014 – 2024). 

We offer programmes in African and other dances; and dance in related fields. The following programmes are available: 

  1. Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree taken over a four (4) year period 
  2. Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Degree taken over a four (4) year period 
  3. Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Degree taken over a two (2) year period 
  4. Master of Philosophy (MPhil) Degree taken over a two (2) year period 

The Department of Dance Studies’ teaching and research programmes are developed from the four (4) central concepts of appreciation, choreography, performance, and documentation. 

The Department has also been widely recognized as a promoter of valuable educational discipline, and this has been manifested by its thorough nurturing of students under their care including the handling of Students under the International Exchange Programmes of the University of Ghana. 

The Department boasts of a strong academic faculty comprising experienced lecturers, who are well supported by accomplished musicians, who provide rhythms for the dance sessions. At present, there are fifteen (15) lecturers, and seven (7) musicians, who are handling approximately one thousand two hundred (1,200) students. 

The opportunities open to students who graduate from the Department are enormous because the instruction we give our students is holistic and enable them to stand out in any environment. I recommend the Department of Dance Studies to you for your Bachelors, and Master’s degrees. It will a very rewarding experience for you.

The Department Examination Officer oversees all examination processes within the Dance Studies Department, ensuring the smooth administration, integrity, and timely release of student results in line with university regulations.

The Administrative Assistant supports the day-to-day operations of the Dance Studies Department, handling correspondence, student records, scheduling, and providing general administrative support to staff and students.
